The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsMy goddaughter overdosed and died today.
27 years old, a single mother of a 5 year old.
She struggled for many years with pain and self-medicated. She tried therapy. She tried Jesus. She tried finding a man who would take care of her. But dammit, she tried!
My BFF is her grandfather. He adopted her before she was born b/c his son and girlfriend were planning on abortion. And my friend and his wife (not the grandmother) raised her. Made me part of their family.
She made me smile in many ways. They lived in Lynchburg , VA. She was in HS when the school PA announced that Jerry Falwell died in May of 2007. She jumped up and yelled "Yaaaaaaay!" That was effin' brave considering that Falwell was the de facto King of Lynchburg.
She asked me for advice from time to time. I supported her all the way all the time.
My BFF is going to raise her daughter, his great granddaughter.

(1,823 posts)This is awful. Addiction is a disease that far too many people simply don't understand.
I wish you, your BFF and his family all the love and strength for the days ahead.

Very rarely over the years I have had friends who have beaten back the addition demons, and then went on to far better lives. My best to your goddaughter's family in their time of grief, and my best to you too, for you in your time of grief. I'm sure that you are a beacon of light in their lives, they are lucky to have you at their side. Take care be be safe.

(2,896 posts)his case. (I don't know what he thought he was getting, but definitely not that much fentanyl; it was more of a murder than an accidental overdose.)
It's so hard when we have known them as children, and have seen who they really are and might have become. My friend's grandson tried really hard, too. People with addiction issues need more effective support than we currently are providing.
My deepest condolences.

(161 posts)I get it. Going through it myself right now. Not the first time. Most likely not he last. My lifestyle brings me into contact with many, many addicts, rape victims, survivors of beatings and a shit load of fucked up vets from recent wars/campaigns as well my brothers from vietnam. Shit my father served in korea. He was 95 in september and still drives.
But I digress...
As someone who cycles through this fucking shit myself, who also has a very difficult time expressing it to those who are loved the most, the significant few who gain trust through years of trite suedo-trust- testing yet still remain, is sometimes times the hardest. Got fucked over by one of 20 years just last monday. Boo f'ing hoo...
Your BFF is a doghammed hero. So are you.
Love your LIFE!

(11,637 posts)I hope her little girl will be given so much love that she will feel secure and safe. So sorry for your loss.
We are just now watching 'Dopesick' on Hulu--regarding the Purdue pharma deliberate push of the dangerous drug on the innocent. Evil bloody people and to think they wanted to saturate the world with it.
If that 5 year old girl needs secret admirers/pen-pals/friends just let us know. We would be happy to send her holiday presents and cards. Growing up is tough.

(4,932 posts)The son of a dear friend. He battled addiction for more than 10 years. He was just 28 when he bought some fentanyl laced heroin.
I do my best to remember good things about him and exorcise the image of him in a casket and his mother's primal wail.
I'm so very sorry for your loss. I sympathize and send love and hopes for healing and comfort. We need to remove the stigma and work to get access to treatment to prevent future tragedies.

(20,601 posts)and so sorry a young woman has lost her life. I am guessing she needed more help from the medical system than they were willing to give, as in adequate pain relief.
