Been going for 30 + years. Noticed the prices were...stunningly high, and asked the butcher what the deal is..I've known him since high school, old chum, sorta, anyway, he told me that the same order of chicken has literally doubled from the wholesaler in 6 weeks. Beef, pork, all gone way up, claims that its due to supply chain...something. Not sure weather it's just a way to drive up prices...but a pound of skinless chicken thighs were $1.22 August, and today the same pound was $2.88...so you decide if it's a swindle, or greed. Something ain't right.

(11,023 posts)I think there's been COVID issues in meat processing plants as well.
But yes, meat prices are up. Dairy as well, although I haven't noticed it as bad.

(32,676 posts)When price goes up, buy less or switch to plant base protein, like beans.
It is a 2 way street.

(2,113 posts)I work for a "center-of-the-plate" protein importer/wholesaler/distributor (mainly beef, chicken, pork & seafood; some dairy). Prices are insane and supply is spotty on a lot of items. Catfish fillets that used to be around $3/lb are now pushing $6/lb. That's about what I paid retail from my grocery store a few weeks ago. This is nuts.

And many shelves at Aldi completely bare.

(6,446 posts)this is unfortunately true. All of the meat we've been purchasing for years (at only moderate fluctuations in the past) has increased in price... if we can get it. Our suppliers are limiting our quantities as well. Some items we haven't been able to get in months. Our bakery nearly had to shut down for lack of butter! Not sure if things will ever be back to "normal"...

(38,311 posts)Somehow these high prices are not "trickling down" to the people who actually produce the stuff.

(162 posts)Our local chain (Hannaford) does great loss leaders! This week it's split chicken breast at $.89 per pound and mixed pork chops at $.99 per pound...I'm on Social Security and came here (New Hampshire) years ago. In Connecticut where I lived for 45 years I suspect I would be either homeless or starving. Up north I'm doing OK.
