I saw the surgeon in June and he said I needed surgery but had to get clearance from my cardiologist before he could do it. July and August were spent getting tested by the cardiologist and at the end of August he gave the clearance.
But the hospital was full of COVID patients so I waited a month and called back in at the beginning of October - still too many COVID patients so I called back today. FINALLY they could schedule me.
November 19th I go under the knife for the fifteenth time since 2001.
I think I will skip Thanksgiving this year - but I will go ahead and buy a turkey to cook when I feel up to it. Usually even if I go to relatives for Turkey Day, I cook my own, cut it up, and freeze batches to have turkey later in the year. In fact tonight I had the last of the old turkey in a sandwich for dinner.
The good news is that my husband will be able to go to his family's get together if they have one. I'll be recovered enough to be left alone by then.

(15,154 posts)I had the same situation. Originally scheduled for surgery August 6. Just went under the knife last Friday. Was supposed to stay in the hospital over night, but they booted me because of the Covid patients. Rough first 24 hours, but feeling better today.
Best of luck to you!

(24,606 posts)Fifteen surgeries is beyond my imagining, but you sound optimistic and that is so important.

(34,137 posts)Most of the operations were out patient, but the number of them keeps adding up.
I've got to be optimistic - I don't have time to be depressed about it.

(22,050 posts)I have a similar tale. I was supposed to get a full knee replacement a year ago but it was postponed at the last minute, literally the afternoon before, because I had anemia. It took several months to schedule the procedures to address that issue and several more months to re-schedule all of the doctors and tests.
Finally, I got my final clearance yesterday and will go to the hospital on Monday. Cant wait to get on the other side of this thing.
Best wishes!

(34,137 posts)I had both mine replaced in 2012, one at a time. Frankly, my knees hurt less the day after the operation than they did the day before.
Be sure to do your physical therapy - it really helps!

(22,050 posts)The technologies have improved exponentially in the past decade. My doctor said Ill be walking with assistance five hours after the surgery! One night in the hospital because of a minor heart condition otherwise it would be an out-patient procedure!
Well both be fine. Best of luck, Kali!

(55,020 posts)I'm going in on Tuesday. did my first knee in July 2019 and was planning to do the other one that fall but I stupidly blew it off thinking spring would be fine. then covid. then my surgeon retired. and more covid. finally found another surgeon and was trying for mid November (to blow off Tday too! LOL) but the scheduler was aiming for early December. then they had a cancellation so it's on for next week.
can't wait, the knee is just DONE, can't stand for 5 minutes, can barely walk a 1/4 mile.
I hope you have a full and speedy recovery, too, Kali!

(34,137 posts)I know exactly how you feel with it. Both mine were at that point before I had them replaced. I couldn't stand long enough to load the dishwasher.
Take care and do your physical therapy.
