(39,840 posts)Both were steeped in dysfunctionality, but the one I'm thinking of might be best describbed as an evening soap opera.
I often thought Norman Lear was inspired by The Serial, but set it in a fictional town in Ohio with loopy charactors
The Serial: A Year in the Life of Marin County (often referred to as The Serial) is a satirical novel about Marin County, California, written by Cyra McFadden.[1] Beginning in 1976, the book's chapters had been serialized in the Marin County alternative weekly newspaper Pacific Sun, as well as the San Francisco Chronicle. It was first published in book form in 1977
Cyra (hot tubs and peacock feathers) McFadden was my neighbor back in the day

(39,840 posts)Martin Mull starred in the film, Serial, and did Fernwood Tonight, the summer replacement for the Lear nighttime soap opera that took place in the fictional town of Fernwood, Ohio.
I never saw the film, but I just discovered Tommy Smothers did a cameo in it as Reverend Spike!

(32,900 posts)(He now owns Remick Ridge Vineyards in Sonoma County)
Brother Buzz
(39,840 posts)The vineyard was named after his grandfather, Ed Remick, who basically built and ran it early on. Tommy hasn't made wine for a long time; he discontinued the Smothers Brothers label and introduced the Remick label years ago. The Kenwood store closed a LONG time ago.
![]()
Arrowhead made the wine for years, but now they purchase the grapes, and even manage the vines, to produce their own label.
![]()
Tom Smothers was no stranger to Marin County in the late fifties and early sixties. There are some cool stories of him encountering restaurateur extraordinaire, Juanita Musson in Sausalito (Her joints got jumping after the bars closed); having a HUGE saggy breast slung over your shoulder is something you don't easily forget and Tommy experienced it more then once.
