(53,616 posts)Against his mother's wishes, his father registered him as "Major Major Major"...so the Army, when they got hold of him, promoted him very quickly.
True story: When I was in the 101st, one of the people in my company was named Clark Major. Really nice person. As has been known to happen, Clark got promoted to sergeant. When you answer a military phone you say something like "2/22 Infantry Supply Room, Sergeant Jones speaking. This is an unsecure line. How may I help you, sir or ma'am?" When this guy answered the phone the other end would usually reply with "Sergeant Major who? You're not supposed to have a sergeant major there." He quickly learned to answer the phone "Sergeant Clark Major."

Same film as Senator Walter Chalmers.
jmowreader
(53,616 posts)The captain told Frank that Chalmers was grooming himself for public office. They called him Mr. Chalmers pretty consistently through the movie, so he wasnt in the Senate. When Frank was getting his ass chewed for moving Renick someone in the office said Chalmers could fight for us in the legislature, so it seems like Chalmers was running for the state senate, not the US Senate. They never said what that asshole did for a living, but it feels like he was either the police commissioner or fairly high up in the DAs office.
Harker
(18,392 posts)because he called Ross "my witness" in relation to Senate committee hearings, which wouldn't be held in SF were it the US Senate.
You're right, though, he very well might've been an ambitious guy in a DA's office.
Wouldn't be the first time I'd drawn an incorrect conclusion.
I should have said, "Asshole Walter Chalmers.". No doubt about that!

Jones, a 16 year old kid who was with Bonnie and Clyde during most of their crime spree, and Henry Methvyn, another sometime member of the Barrow gang. It was Methvyn's father who set up the ambush that killed Bonnie and Clyde.

(18,392 posts)I ran it a few weeks ago with my wife (her first viewing) and her response was disbelief that anyone could be as stupid as Thornhill, becoming ever more deeply involved in the intrigue. She seemed offended, occasionally shaking her head and saying, "what an idiot."
At least her gripe was with Thornhill rather than Hitchcock.
I find that sometimes it's best to just let drop the tether tied to one's credibility, and go along for the ride. I'm hardly immune, though, as some directors have pissed me off pretty badly.

(53,616 posts)Sick enough not to realize the Navy doesnt expect you to hold course when doing it will get you killed.
Sick enough to go completely off the handle at a sailor whose shirt tail was untucked and both of the deck officers while not realizing he was hazarding the ship in the process. (Article 110 UCMJ, section 2: negligently hazarding a vessel of the Armed Services is a court-martial offense.) If I was the helmsman I would have just turned the wheel to go left of the buoy; its not like Queeg would have noticed anyway.
Sick enough that he forgot he didnt want to see any more Westerns.
And sick enough that the head mess man was terrified to tell the bastard his subordinates finished the strawberries before they could go bad. Its not like frozen strawberries have any sort of a shelf life once theyve been thawed.
I think Queeg was put in command of the Caine because Headquarters Department of the Navy was sick of his shit. They couldnt make him a department leader on a good ship because none of the squadron commanders of good ships wanted him around. They couldnt let him ride out the war behind a desk because no shore commander would put up with him. And they couldnt medically retire him because the Navy wasnt allowed to discharge anyone with four working limbs. So
they figured he couldnt hurt anyone in the junkyard Navy and stuck him there
where he damn near killed 150 sailors. DeVriess didnt run a pretty ship or a pretty crew, but they were good at their jobs under him.

That guy named "Shorty" looked exactly like the guy named Shorty, who left donuts out on a table on the 3rd floor, with a box for people to pay for the donuts....I can't believe it was the same guy named Shorty who sold donuts when I worked there.
I still believe Zodiac was Arthur Leigh Allen, despite the so-called "DNA evidence" that he was not Zodiac
