4. One of my best friends used to work for a Korean-US policy think tank.

I met a few people through him who had escaped/defected from the DPRK and the stories they told of imposed universal conformity were amazing.

Also some of the nicest people I ever met; not withstanding the utter fucking nuttery of their government and the widespread starvation/famine, they're a lot like the people of any other semi-urbanized nation of that part of the world. They love their families. They're patriotic but a bit skeptical of their government. They ride bikes and play on the playground. They eat fried foods and too few green things.
