Smart, too. He tested if who he saw in the mirror was another dog or him, several various ways.

I was left unsure of whether he realized it was him or not. Everything he was doing could also be interpreted as trying to engage another puppy in play, but he became confused when the other puppy didn't respond with play but rather imitated his "play-initiation" gestures. Would have like to see what happened next.

The cat with ears up thread is another matter...!

puppy and is trying to get a reaction from it. He is not recognizing himself in the mirror.

Self-recognition requires conscious self awareness. Dogs and cats are not capable of that kind of self awareness. But they are awfully damned cute when trying to figure out the animal looking back at them.

That'a a bit tougher to figure out imho. That cat sure seems aware of what it's looking at.

It sees ears and touches its own. But it continues to touch only its ears when it sees the whole face. Not knowing the cat personally, I don't know if that is just a quirk of the cat's behavior, like a nervous habit when confronted with uncertainty. Or maybe that particular cat is the exception to the accepted belief about self awareness in cats and dogs.

That would bark at themselves in the mirror no matter how many times they saw themselves.
