They were fighting to maintain a profitable smuggling racket. For a long time the English excise on tea had kept the price high enough smugglers could readily undercut it. The regulations were changed so the East India Company could sell tea to the colonies directly, without London middlemen and taxes. Think along the lines of a cartel mob attacking marijuana dispensaries to get the thing into some modern orientation....
