Meeting a Childhood Heartthrob?

So have you ever had a chance to meet a childhood heartthrob later in life? Someone who was larger than life and you simply adored in your youth (usually with a healthy amount of hormones involved)?

So here is my story.

I was a child of the seventies (born in '66). As a red-blooded American boy, I absolutely loved Olivia Newton John. I mean who didn't? She had the look, the voice and I was crazy for the accent. She was already well known for her music when she did Grease in 1978. I was 12. I was smitten.

Fast forward to 2001. If you remember some of my posts, you may recall I am involved in Search and Rescue for FEMA. I was at 9/11 with my team. I was on a meal break in one of the many cafes set up for the rescue workers when they brought through a USO-style group of celebrities to meet the rescue workers.

Next thing I know, Olivia Newton John sits down right next to me. I was sitting at a table with about 7 other guys. Real rough and tumble firemen types. I kept up the façade for about 10 seconds before I just melted into a gibbering fanboy. I just didn't care what they thought. This was Olivia Newton John after all. The funny thing is that after I broke the ice, they all reacted the same way. She was very kind and gracious and still beautiful. I was still hooked even after nearly 25 years.

So what about you? Ever have your childhood dream crush drop into your real life?

PS I also had the chance to meet Al Franken there but that is a story for another day.

1. What a great story! She always seems lovely in the interviews I've seen her do.

2. It happened to me exactly once

I was desperately smitten with Lee Remick after “No Way To Treat A Lady” and “Telefon.”

Then, one day, much later, I saw her sitting in front of me on a plane from Boston to London. I had to make sure that she was who I thought she was. By that time, I knew she was married to SF some guy in England, and I was already firmly in the hands of my wife-to-be. So I just asked if she was Lee Remick. She said yes she was. I just said I was a long-time fan, and wouldn't bother her further. She had this smile that could melt titanium ore (much like my wife does). I heard later that she died at 55 of liver cancer.

Although I am normally attracted to Latin, Turkish or Oriental women, two blonde women had always fascinated me. Lee Remick was one of them. I married the other one.

3. That is so sweet- but, I DO have to say that after you posted your wedding photos a while back

I think your wife is actually prettier than Lee Remick....

I always enjoy your posts-

6. DFW's wife is indeed beautiful.

But Lee Remick was one of a kind. She was so stunning that she sometimes didn’t quite look real.

I too, was destroyed when she died so young.

9. If you're a straight man, who would want to have choose between these two?

10. Not me.

Your wife is perfectly lovely. You're a lucky man, DFW.

11. I never won anything in my life--except 48 years--so far--with her

Which is more important than anything else, of course.

12. Full disclosure- I am a married female :)

Lee Remick was incredibly gorgeous- no doubt! However, I only saw her photos in full makeup etc. So, yeah...gonna have to vote on Mrs. DFW for the actual win

But, oh yes- Lee Remick was stunning!

13. I have to recuse myself

Any impartiality I might claim should be disbelieved immediately!

8. Thanks for that!

One of the amazing things about my wife (and there are many) is that she has no idea how good she looks. I tell her, of course, but she just thinks I'm fulfilling my marital obligations. I saw Lee Remick in films before I ever met my wife, and never thought to make a comparison.

4. I wish I had met David Cassidy- but, when he was David Partridge

Funny, his brother is on FB now and interacts with his fans. Women my age (I am 58) are filling the venues to see him. He seems like a nice guy- still cute!

But if I had to meet my real true lifelong heart throb, it would be Robert Redford- I loved him even before I met Bruce Springsteen...

5. Met Jon Wesley Shipp

I met Jon Wesley Shipp, who started out on Guiding Light when I was a teenager, and I had a crush on him. I met him a few years back at a convention, because he was playing the father of Barry Allen on "The Flash". He and I had a great convo about the old days when he was on GL. So now I follow him on FB. BTW, he's also a flaming liberal. I wouldn't be surprised if he was on here.

7. I would love to meet Isabella Rossellini some day.

Easily one of the most beautiful women in this sector of the Galaxy.

And that molasses-thick Swedish-Italian accent is just to die for.

14. I never met Natalie Wood but it's just as well.

I would have turned into a mound of quivering jelly.

I was devastated by the news of her untimely death.

And piss on Kirk Douglas by the way.
