They are not aggressive birds and are good meat birds and excellent egg producers.

They are hybrids though and mating a Golden Comet rooster with a Golden Comet hen will not produce Golden Comet off spring.

My former wife and I had a dozen of them and their egg production didn't slack off much during the very cold winter months.

Ornamental/pets/show, versus egg production versus all purpose/meat and egg production, all kind of different uses, so different breeds are required.

For egg production, I really like my ISA Browns. They're 3 (well, pretty sure, it's hell getting old, I can't remember!) and still were laying well until about 2 weeks ago when they entered moult. But, I've read they tend to not live long because they are such egg machines and it's hard on the body.

Those brown eggs, and the general disposition of this breed.

Last time I had a rooster, he was a Red, and named him "Kellogg" because he gave me his best every morning.

Thanks, with all that is going on, its a joy to think about chickens.

Lassie used to hide around the corner of her shed, wait for the hens to gather around her food dish, then run out barking. The hens scattered in panic, and Lassie would sit there laughing!

Lassie looked like this dog:

We used to have an old hen around the place. She had quite a personality. She ruled the roost, literally, and even kept the dogs in line. Her coloring was just a little darker than the one you have pictured.
