The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsAn observation at a yard sale I went to yesterday.
The sale was in a neighborhood very close to mine, so I thought Id stop and have a look. As you approached the garage, this woman had a yard sign displayed in front of the sale tables - I wish I could remember the wording exactly - but it said something like in this house, all people are treated with dignity, women have equal rights with men, Black Lives Matter, etc. etc.. Several ladies there including me told the homeowner they loved her sign and was it for sale! She replied that the drug store near a park on Youngstowns north side was giving them out for free. It was so refreshing to see this interest in the sign in this (mostly white) neighborhood.
(and I scored a Bob Feller bobble head that he had autographed (this was from 2002)
along with the game ticket and a photo of him signing it, in a nice plastic case! Ten bucks!!

I really am beginning to believe there are more of us than I thought before.
Saw an elderly white guy in the convenience store recently wearing a mask that said Black Lives Matter.
Its a start

(62,431 posts)That is a like stealing home on Feller himself!
I sure did get a steal!
I also have a book he wrote and signed, so this bobble adds to my collection nicely.
I now have 12 Cleveland Indians bobble heads. 🙂. I need to get a Guardians one now!

(16,976 posts)I had a season program cover my Dad had kept, and a Life magazine with an ad in it featuring him. He was having a pretty routine day till he saw our items. The program wasn't dated, so he looked at it for awhile and thought it might be around 1938, because the field had lights for evening games. When he saw the ad, he said, "I'll be damned. I bought a car like that for my mother." I think we sold the cover on eBay, but probably still have the magazine, somewhere :/
I have a brick from the old Cleveland Stadium, and 2 Indians shirts, and maybe a hat.
It is refreshing to see signs like that. Several people in town display signs with positive messages. I think there are more good people than bad. The nasties are the ones we hear about. Thanks for sharing!

(32,015 posts)My dad pitched in the Cleveland sandlots. Feller was his boyhood idol. Ive never met Feller, but I have met Rocky Colavito and Gaylord Perry.
Remember the phrase the silent majority? I think thats what group we belong to now. Youre right, it seems like the real crazies get all the publicity.

(15,541 posts)My brother pitched in the sandlots also. Our paternal grandfather used to take my father to League Park when he was just a lad. My father sat next to Early Wynn in a bar and he gave my father an autographed baseball. I have no idea whatever happened to it, but my brother was thrilled. I spent many a childhood summer at Municipal Stadium.

(9,188 posts)at his museum in Van Meter his Iowa home town. Rapid Robert had two moods: avuncular grandpa and axe murderer. I caught him in the second, he charged me, signed, and was rude about it. In that order.
To be fair, most of my contact with him was on a day when hed torn the guts out of his Jag by running over something on I80 at 70 mph. He was pissed about that, and worried about how he was going to pick up Ted Williams who was resting at a Des Moines hotel. At another time, he signed his book for my daughter, and couldnt have been nicer.

(16,928 posts)Can you imagine being in a space with Bob Feller AND Ted Williams, BOTH in a bad mood?
rsdsharp
(9,188 posts)He and Feller were signing autographs. Teds was $25 on a museum provided photo it was a fund raiser for the museum. They announced he wouldnt sign balls, but I had my copy of the Science of Hitting, and wanted him to sign the famous strike zone full of balls picture in the middle.
They tried to take it away from me before I went into the room, but I persisted. He agreed to sign it, and I tried to flatten it out for him. He tried a couple of times, looked up and said, Ill sign if you let go of it, DEAR! Bear in mind that I am a very large man. 🤣

(9,188 posts)One time we were waiting to get into his museum to get Ozzie Smiths autograph, on a cold, windy October afternoon. He actually came out with cups of coffee, and stood around schmoozing.
When he found himself, at the age of 80, 700 miles from home, with a car leaking trans fluid, oil, antifreeze and brake fluid, for which he had a $1000 deductible, when an ailing Ted Williams was looking to him for transportation, he was pretty cranky. Understandable, but memorable just the same.
