Brazilian Quimbandieras.
"Quimbanda is one of several religious systems that is part of the African diaspora.
Practitioners of Quimbanda perform rituals called trabalhos, which can be used to ask the spirits for assistance with love, justice, business, and vengeance.
Unlike Umbanda and some of the other Afro-Brazilian religions, Quimbanda does not invoke any of the Catholic saints; instead, practitioners call upon the spirits of Exus, Pomba Giras, and Ogum."

Even for non believers, respect is in order.
These belief systems were born in slavery, as a way of preserving cultural heritage that the slavers tried unsuccessfully to wipe out, with whippings, torture and murder.
Like Voudou, this tradition utilizes full possession of a medium/Priest or Priestess by the entities. Initiation and training is required.
However, the belief system is accesible to laypersons on a certain level, as I have been told.
My take?
It works.
Mad respect.

I couldn't get the photo I wanted to post to work.
I'm not surprised by that.
And, no disrespect intended toward other traditions.
And they ARE our neighbors.
To the South.
Most traditions have their own special beauty, in art and music.
Full possession during ceremony -
You can often tell when Pomba Gira (female entity) has entered the house, from her beautiful, brazen laugh. Pomba Gira has seven husbands, but she is controlled by no man. She is the personification of the strong independent woman.
Hope you can Samba.

(19,572 posts)Pomba Gira is referred to as the "Spinning Dove".
You can see why.
I have had a Quimbanda consult done in my name in Brazil (I stayed here). I now know who my guardian spirits (Exu and Pomba Gira, Father and Mother) are. First step of initiation, and probably as far as I go without a pilgrimage to Brazil.
I am friends with a Priestess who lives in Southeast U.S. who made me beautiful necklaces, one for each entity.
How does a man of European descent get accepted?
One of the deities is Irish!
So am I.
Exu Tiriri.
I wonder if the Portuguese also persecuted Irish in Brazil?
Here is a famous Irish/Brazilian, Phil Lynott, lead man of the band " Thin Lizzy".
Brazilian Father, Irish Mother.
This song was inspired by stories his Father told him of the Gauchos..
