I visited the beautiful Dutch city of Amsterdam about a dozen times from 2000 to 2007. I found a great place to stay, a sixteenth-century canal house, through a bed and breakfast web site and stayed there for all of those visits but the first one. The man who owned the house and I got to be pretty good friends. He is a very interesting person, and his house is a fascinating place itself with a lot of history behind it, but those are other stories ...
He just loved his two cats; he called them "my babies". As a cat lover myself, he and I had something to talk about. One day in his kitchen we were watching the two cats chowing down. He started telling me about the older female cat and how she would pilfer food from the younger male cat's bowl "when she thinks I'm not looking". This was when George W. Bush was president. I asked him if he knew anything about American politics. I don't remember what his answer was, but I remember telling him about his two cats, "She's a Republican, and he's a Democrat." Or at least, that's what those two cats would be if they were humans.
