I admit I'm an old fart, but I love metal, particularly with a cultural bent like Within Temptation and Blind Guardian.
Any new ones out there?

(30,885 posts)...I see them closer to the "progressive" end of that scale and not so much "metal." Although Steven Wilson DOES have King Crimson's "Red" in his veins, and that album...especially the title track...was "progressive metal."
KC's Adrian Belew plays the guitar solo on this, the title track from their "Deadwing" album:

(33,688 posts)I was always a fan of Type O Negative. They definitely had a prog bent in their goth-metal. And, in all seriousness, Dethklok.
Porcupine Tree is a great band!

(30,885 posts)Overkill was / is a "Thrash Metal" band a la Metallica, Anthrax and Slayer, but on their "I Hear Black" album (source of this clip) they slowed things down and got a little closer to the prog metal genre.

(776 posts)He's not really new, but a lot of people might not be aware of him.
"Awake!" from a recent concert series:
An older song: "Deep Peace" with a beautiful instrumental part in the middle
"Bender It Like Bender!" for the sheer fun of it. When's the last time you saw metalheads smiling and dancing like this?
I really need to get that "By A Thread" concert series...
On Edit: found a better version of "Bend It Like Bender!"
