Man, oh man, am I an idiot!

I just had a Ukrainian refugee family in the clinic to do a routine test for tuberculosis. One of the sons started feeling a little faint during the blood draw. My team leader came and got me. I speak a little Russian, and no Ukrainian, and said as much to the young man in Russian. He just gave me a confused look. Then I realized I had said "I don't speak Russian" instead of "I don't speak Ukrainian", but in pretty good Russian. No wonder he looked confused.

Fortunately, his mother spoke a little English, and we got it sorted out.

I once told a native Spanish speaker that they only spoke a little bit of Spanish, and not very well--later realized I got the "me" and the "you" confused. The person just nodded.
