No, I've heard that and it isn't the case. They use throat noises when taking off.

Just in my backyard. It isn't the wings. They make a slapping noise, not a dove call.

Usually I get a mourning dove nesting in it, but I had the tree trimmed back early in the spring so no nest this year. I sure have missed it.

not as pleasant of a sound.
When taking off and landing, Mourning Doves wings make a loud whistling that may help startle predators or warn flock mates. They also can clap their wings together during takeoff much the way Rock Pigeons do.

A couple of weeks ago we had one swoop in not 8 feet above us on a hunt. DAMN was that a pretty bird!!!
