Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsJen is pregnant.
We've been trying for three months now and for us it seemed like an emotional roller coaster ride into eternity. We're kind of long in the tooth to be doing this and Jen didn't think she had much time left. But we got the deal done, yes indeed.
I feel unlike any way I ever have: protective, elated, anxious, hopeful, amazed. I feel like I'm beginning to do the most important thing I'll ever do. I think Jen is feeling the same way and she is so happy. She wanted this so badly.
I've been getting more healthy lately, and I quit smoking, but I think now it's time to get serious about my weight. I'm going to have to plan out converting our spare bedroom into a baby's room. So much to do.
I'm going to be a daddy!

(38,339 posts)Our son wasn't yet two, my wife was a full time student, and I was working nights.
I remember falling asleep on the floor while playing with him... and he was lifting up my eyelids, saying "DA!!!! DA!!!" and I was having this hideous work dream where I couldn't get the green numbers on the computer screen right and my child's face was there too, and my boss had that horrible expression of understanding and acceptance which meant I'd failed at life but she wasn't going to fire me.
And my wife and I put a chain lock high on the door because we were terrified he'd escape and freeze to death in the snow.
So one day it was snowing and I thought he was sleeping and I came up from the basement after putting a load of laundry in and he'd climbed out of his crib dragged a chair to the front door and unlocked it. Two minutes later he would have been gone.
He's a college graduate and he's still like that...

(30,151 posts)Hopefully you'll be lucky and your new child will sleep through the night like our girl did after 2 or 3 weeks. I've got some friends/co-workers who aren't so lucky. I take it this is your first, don't worry about breaking the baby, they are pretty tough. I recommend putting down some cheap laminate wood flooring in the baby room.
The first year is actually pretty easy. It's when they can run, talk, scream, yell, throw and climb that will wear you down. My girl turns three in November and goes 12-14 hours straight without a nap every day. Had her in the pool with me cleaning it out after work yesterday to burn off some extra energy
Of course when we are on the couch and it's late and she snuggles up next to me and says "luv you daddy" it's all worth it
