Best Way To Find a Place To Rent?

I'm overwhelmed with the number of websites that list rentals. Do you have any experience with any of them?

I'm in Orange County CA, but I'm sure there are sites that have listings everywhere.

Thanks.

for rental signs. That is how I found mine. If it is a popular neighborhood they may not bother listing it in the newspaper as people will tell their friends. Got a great deal.

in Santa Monica 10 blocks from the beach. I literally drove up and down the streets looking for signs out in front of buildings. Turned out to be a great first apartment for me and my first husband.

Forty years later and across the continent in the college town of Chapel Hill, NC, my second husband and I built a detached garage with a studio apartment above it. We were on a dead end street within walking distance to campus. I used to advertise the apartment on Craigslist and it would immediately be snapped up. Last time I rented it, I put the word out to several of my neighbors who were professors on campus, and an incoming PhD student applied to rent it. Didn't even have to advertise.

So I would advise you to drive the area where you hope to live, check Craigslist, and if you know anyone in any of the neighborhoods, ask if they know of rentals. You can also check Zillow for rentals in the zip code where you are looking.
