(22,037 posts)Could be a cool song, eh?
All kidding aside, does it really matter other than when to pay bills?
Without getting too philosophical, all we really have is the moment of the present which is informed by the years of our pasts. Who knows what'll happen tonight or tomorrow?
Happy new year to you, Marcus. Whatever that means!

(16,846 posts)And whose mythology do you believe? It would be nice to know the actual age of the Earth or the date of the dawn of mankind, but we probably never will. I just celebrate the same year as most of the people around me. It's easier, and usually a lot of fun.

(18,479 posts)As we currently count them, tomorrow will be 'next year'. Why the line between years is sidereally fixed where it is, IMO, is just tradition.
For today, I wouldn't worry about.
We do have an interest in numbering things.

(6,756 posts)For them to be correct there has to be a year zero.
0-999
1000-1999
2000-?
So my time travel machine went back to year zero.
"Hey what year is it?"
"There is no year!"

1001-2000

Airline passengers stranded on a remote Pacific island after an emergency landing on the way to Sydney have made the most of their unexpected, idyllic New Years Eve adventure but theres a catch.
The locals in Pago Pago, American Samoa, where the flight from Los Angeles was forced to land after fears over a potential mechanical problem in one of the planes engines, took passengers on a tour of the island and served beers on a deserted beach.
But thanks to a quirk of time zones, the rescue flight sent to take them on to Sydney was due to skip across the international dateline shortly after takeoff, flying from New Years Eve morning to New Years Day morning with no midnight to celebrate in between.
