I shudda called the pharmacy this a.m., in anticipation of their being closed today.
So I bought a wee bottle of Merlot and more Ibuprofin.

(16,963 posts)Bite down on an aspirin. Don't do this if you are senstive to aspirin in any way.
Can you get hold of the otc medicine for toothaches? Do you have any oil of cloves. If you do, use a Qtip and brush it on the achey tooth.
Maybe your dentist could get a local hospital pharmacy to fill the prescriptions until you can get it filled Monday?
I feel for you.

(86,636 posts)Beware of it on you inner cheeks and fleshy parts inside your mouth, especially if you use the oil, it can burn and cause canker sores.
If that does happen, dissolve a Vitamin E or Evening Primrose oil capsule in your mouth and coat the sore with the oil inside. That will cure sores real fast.

(130,948 posts)I have kept OLD Ibu+codeine around, in case I need it, which I haven't done in quite a while.
Good ideas suggested above, and check with PCIntern.

(115 posts)Not much, but it was better than nothing. I searched "acupressure tooth pain"
It was far from a perfect solution but it helped until I could get to a dentist

(470 posts)Many dentists recommend. A tablespoon or two (whatever feels right for your mouth size) any oil, Swish vigorously, up to 20 minutes. DO NOT SWALLOW OR GARGLE. Spit out. Regular 2X daily after waking and last meal, will help curb infection. For pain add a pinch of crushed/ground cloves. I am not a doctor so any concerns consult yours or a dentist. Meditation with binaural beat, solfeggio music may help - any ethereal/nature scape music will calm your mind and nerves if you're not familiar with the two types suggested. Good luck!

(10,126 posts)Good gargles with mouthwash might help reduce the infection.
You can crush aspirin into a glass of water with salt in it (the salt helps reduce the infection). The aspirin helps with the pain
You don't swallow it so it shouldn't affect blood thinning significantly. You just let it sit in your mouth for a while and spit it out. Eat some spinach or shredded broccoli with vit K if you are concerned about blood thinning.
For bad pain my dentist suggested ibuprofen and acetaminophen (Tylenol & Advil combo).
For a tooth pull, they'll give you 600 ibuprofen (roughly equivalent to 3 over the counter pills).
Extra strength Oragel (or similar) applied to the gum area helps. It has clove oil in it (which also helps on its own)
That won't eliminate the pain but it will take a significant edge off it.

(63,912 posts)Later, around dinner, I'll have a glass of wine. I usually don't drink alcohol but this is kind of an emergency. We even have noon-alcoholic champagne for our anniversary dinner tomorrow (hubby is making a nice feast for us).

(22,482 posts)the wine sit on the tooth before I swallowed it. I think the alcohol help deaden the pain somewhat. I was going through a lot more than just a little bit of it though.

(63,912 posts)quite enough! My sleep quality will be badly damaged, I realize, but I guess you do what you need to do. And tomorrow is another day.
Good night, my DU friend! Thank you for your advice and your concern and I will try your remedy if it becomes necessary.

(50,273 posts)weeks ago and managed to get in to see the dentist before the holidays. I thought for sure it was an infection, but it was my old nemesis tooth grinding at night. They adjusted the bite and I'm much better. The Oragel applied to the gums even helped with that. Good luck. There's nothing more miserable than a toothache.

Damnit! I can't believe this whole scenario! No open pharmacies! I'm depending on wine to alleviate the sharp pain of this tooth nerve. Is this the 17th century?
I'm in fucking Connecticut, for chrissake! In New Haven with Yale New Haven Hospital, attracting some of the best doctors in the goddamn world! I'm not in a "shithole country" (apologies to shithole countries).
Hoping for the best. Cheers (raises glass of wine)!

(22,482 posts)I was taking Vicodin, Advil, Med Marijuana and some form of alcohol and I still could only sleep for about 2 hours at a time before the pain would wake me up again.
I realized that the dentist digging in my jaw and pushing my mouth far too open triggered a bad case of TMJ that I had years ago from fainting and falling straight on my jaw.
The thing that finally helped was a prednisone pack.
You got some good ideas on this thread. I'd try all of them, (Oh I was also using toothache oil and clove oil)
Best of luck to you. And someone told me that emergency rooms usually have dentists on call if you need to go. At least they would be able to give you a shot or something
EDIT - Also an ice pack on the side of your face.
