Oh lawdy. So mad I could just spit! Hindsight is always 20/20! Background: For many years I have always kept my one-length long hair (halfway down to my elbows) and just opted for a trim now and then - no biggie. Well, a few days ago, I decided that I needed a change and went to a local hairstylist (and I use that term loosely) and had in my possession a few hairstyles for the look I was going for. Basically a cut with long layers. Nothing drastic - just a subtle change.
Well - let me tell ya - this gal didn't know what she was doing. Clue #1 ya'll: If all you see are elder ladies coming and going...not a good sign.
Clue #2: She didn't take her time with my hair. At first, I kind of liked the change. I mean - it WAS different after all...then when I got home I started to notice that it wasn't really *shaped* that well. Kind of *chunky* actually. I contacted her about it and she told me that if I could leave right now - she could fit me in while she was doing a perm/dye job on someone else - so - OK. I go.
She takes my hair all willy-nilly and tries to correct what I NOW KNOW that she SHOULD HAVE TAKEN THE TIME TO SECTION OFF MY HAIR IN THE FIRST PLACE!!!!
I'm no expert on this crap at all. Though I do remember a few times when I got my hair trimmed before - that my hair was actually *sectioned off* by others and I really liked the result. The stylist actually took their time and I told her about this...then she gets all huffy-puffy and crap telling me that she has been doing hair for over 30 years and that the only time that you need to section off hair is either that you are new or else it is a *Dorothy Hamill* cut.
Adding insult to injury, we sometimes talk about politics and she is a very hard-core "self-righteous* Republican. So like, OK - I figure, we can agree to disagree...I mean after all, she IS the one with the scissors in her hand after all!
But looking in the mirror today, ya'll - she didn't have a clue!
Bottom line: She FAILED to take her time and section off my hair and do it the PROPER WAY.
Warning to everyone here and the reason that I am posting this - ...please don't make the same mistake I made - A professional hair stylist will ALWAYS TAKE THE TIME TO SECTION OFF YOUR HAIR!!!!!!
Moral of the story:
I'm half-tempted to send her a copy of this: http://www.redken.com/whats-hot/hair-tips/daily-hair-tips/ by way of a well-needed *refresher course* on her behalf with a personal note to demand my money back because at the time - I just didn't know any better!:
"Section hair before you style
Ever wonder why professional hairstyles look so good? One reason is that hair stylists take time to divide hair into sections first. Use clips to section off your hair, so you can work in a neat, controlled manner - just like your stylist."
They take the time to *section it off*.
I'm seriously thinking about sending her this page with the notation: Perhaps you need a refresher course - oh, and by the way, I think you owe me a refund.
Word to the wise: INSIST that your hair will be sectioned off.

(20,886 posts)Nothing worse than a bad hair cut, and it's really hard to find a good stylist. Don't know where you live but a Vidal Sassoon school or salon is a good place to try. I'm assuming they're still around.
Note: I used to work for RedKen
although in the art department, not as a stylist.

(1,296 posts)Art Dept. - sounds cool. There's an Aveda salon nearby - I'll probably go there next time.

I'm embarrassed that I went off on a tirade like that over something so small and insignificant...in the bigger scheme of things.
