I'm thinking about starting a new career.

I have a business of my own; a very profitable one. But my work in science has led me to be offered a position in that field. It's a strange opportunity and I'm not sure what they want with me, but it's something that I will regret not doing; I know that.

If anyone here is in the scientific field, I would like to know what they mean when they say that they want your "vision." I don't understand what they expect me to do, or why they want me at all. It's any entirely new world to me, and I'm kind of frightened, especially of failure.

To be honest, "vision" sounds like a warning that you'll need a "buzzword bingo" card to work there. HopeHoops Aug 2012 #1

It usually translates into unpaid overtime. Not to piss in your coffee, but it is worth considering. I'd research the company as heavily as possible and take my time before accepting the position. Keep your eyes and ears open when you tour the facility (and request to do so if they don't offer). You can tell a lot about a company just by observation of those who have been there a while. If it seems cool and the offer is good, go for it. It doesn't mean you have to drop your own business entirely, but you will have to scale it back. Just beware of non-disclosure/non-compete agreements. If you don't like something in it, demand that they change it. Most companies will.
