The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsThere's a Twitter war right now between ignorant younger people upset that Bonnie Raitt
won the Grammy for Song of the Year, and older people (and smart young people) telling them they need to learn who she is.
I'm seeing so many tweets from young people crying that they'd never heard of Bonnie Raitt, and saying the award was "stolen" from Beyonce, Taylor Swift, Lizzo, Harry Styles, Adele, etc.
Bonnie's won 10 Grammy Awards and was given the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award just last year.

(455 posts).....the Grammys and I was just blown away. What a amazing talent. And that slide guitar! By that summer I had gone from "Bonnie who?" to seeing her in concert at the Blossom Music Center while visiting Ohio. Let's hope that these complaining young folk discover her music like I did 30 years ago.

She has a light touch & she hits pitch. If she is a pinch flat or sharp, that's not an accident. It's to set up tension before she resolves to pitch.
She's a master at something It's easy to be OK, but hard to be great.

dude
they will sell those to you by the pound.
The suit he wore to accept his award wasnt all that bad, if you skip over the part where the pants look like gym wear and the thing he was using as a shirt looked like a bustier.
And the sequin silver catsuit would have looked fantastic with six-inch heels, smokey eyes, Taylor Swifts favorite lipstick, and long earrings.
Harry, my dear, if youre going to the Grammys in drag, go big or go home.

(10,528 posts)that make better music, nominated for a Grammy.
Grammy's are only for the best English music (American & British artists).
They have one category where artists from different nations compete against each other.
I boycott the Grammy's until this happens.
I didn't watch this year, so maybe they did, this year.

(25,577 posts)There are academies in each country that give out the same awards. In spite of being an American award ceremony, based on American record, sales and releases, many foreign and international artists get nominated like this year, Måneskin my favorite rock group from Italy, was in the best new artist category.

(24,841 posts)or First Time Hearing where young people document themselves listening to old classics like Steely Dan's "Black Cow" or "Hey Nineteen" or Fleetwood Mac's "The Chain" and they seem astounded that such good music was made before they were born!
Shit...I remember when "Aja" and then "Gaucho" dropped and within days, every rock station in town (I lived in Miami then) was playing any number of tunes off those records ( I mention those because they were the first albums from a group I really liked to be released right after I started driving, so I heard most of their hits on the car radio first). Ditto "Rumors" and ELO's "A New World Record" and scores more. And fucking Kanye West thinks he is a musical genius. That motherfucker couldn't share the stage with Jeff Beck or Walter Becker or Roger Rosenberg or any number of the hundreds of musicians we all listened to 40 years ago. And the dude that created Boston? He created their debut album in a studio he built in his fucking basement. Anyone know his name? ****
It's not as if no good music was made before 2000, young people! Us old farts had it pretty good back then!
Congratulations, Bonnie. You deserve every award you ever get.

He played on a couple of Steely Dan's albums, as you're probably aware. (On edit to rephrase; He was a founding member of Steely Dan, playing on their first 3 albums.)
While most guitarists played standing up while on stage, Baxter often played while seated in a chair as his signature style.

I should say that I am by no means the kind of person that can rattle off band members names as if they're family, not by a long shot. The primary point I was trying to make in my post above, in response to the OP was, as I said, that there were plenty of great musicians putting out fantastic music long before the Taylor Swift's of the world were a gleam in their fathers eye!

(112,687 posts)country performers for the best country album and best solo performance earlier in the evening?
I know it makes me sound like today's version of a crotchety "Mr. Wilson," but it really IS true, that I knew the musical "stars" of my grandparents' (Big Band) and parents' generation (Sinatra, early rock, early country, late big band, and so forth) and actually took the time to learn and listen to some of them. I detest wanton ignorance and that seems to be de rigeur today.
Honestly, I got bored midway through the Grammys after the great Stevie Wonder performance, but at least I know who the performers are--even those I don't like-- and checked the winner list this morning. And though there are a bunch of overly hyped performers I don't like much, I have listened to at least some of their work and for some, even given them a reassessment a few years in.
I think I will have to seek out the youtube "first impression" series where the two youngest generations listen to that which they have never heard (usually 60's-2000 music) for a palate cleanser. They are always enjoyable to watch.

(32,654 posts)All those people congratulating and thanking each other and most of them don't mean a word of it.
I often take a break halfway through and come back to see the last half of it later.
I know who the performers are, like you. I don't have to rush out and buy their music to appreciate them.
What I did not appreciate was the closing act. Why did DJ Khaled have to close the show? He is noisy and boring. I have no respect for him. Don't play yourself? He was doing that for us. He can go somewhere and play with himself. I don't think he had any respect for the audience, either.
