Friends of mine going for postgraduate degrees in Philosophy told me
that if you met someone with a postgrad Philosophy degree, you were
meeting someone who smoked WAY too much dope in college.

If that's possible to do, I think I should be awarded some goddam
honorary degrees, I'll tell you what!!!

(41,960 posts)Not that it isn't true in our backwardsassed society, but really, wouldn't it be nice if a degree in seriously trying to make heads or tales out of this crazy existance was respected and nurtured? I suspect most people think that's just a way of doing nothing, but it's not. Not many people are up to it. Most hide it behind the guise of relifious studies and sometimes manage to get away with it then, and some people (frankly, like me) become therapists so people can think philosophical thoughts and worry about their existance and the existance of the world with us. And some are writers (like me) and musicians and artists who approach the whole thing through representation, going below the intellectual into the experiential level. But I'd like to see some appreciation for straight-up philosophers. They give us more than we know.

...to the worth of "knowledge" for a long, long time. Getting worse with the mindset
of short-term financial planning.

My poetry prof was considered a "Young Turk" -- a well-published highly acclaimed
poet (I never liked or understood his poetry much, but he could teach the HELL out
of aspiring young poet-wannabes!!!).
.
He resented the fact that he HAD to teach in order to pay the mortgage, despite
his "success".
.
Yet in other cultures (Russian, Turkish & Israeli come to mind) poets are REVERED!!!
.
.
.
The biggest thing he and I disagreed on was his (how ironic) philosophy about poetry
in America. He would tell us, "It's just you and me, kids" meaning that the only people
who would be interested in our poetry would be other poets.
.
I told him that was a self-fulfilling prophecy -- that many poets who bought into that
DID write for other poets instead of for "the people" -- which is what all those revered
poets in other cultures did. They didn't dumb it down -- they just spoke to them and
their essences instead of above them.

I stopped writing poetry long ago -- but I wrote a lot of blues/common/everyman
poetry. Perhaps the best compliment I ever got was from that prof, who said that
if I continued, when Charles Bukowski died, I would inherit the title of "Dirty Old Man
of Poetry".
.
Wow. Just wow.

(41,960 posts)Blues/common/everyman poetry is poetry. Some of it's great poetry. And yeah, I envy poets who live in countries who value poetry. Although, I did recently have the mixed but flattering and ultimately satisfying experience of writing a poem for, I kid you not, a city planning commission's vision statement for the future. By "document" I mean a binder with sections, and I had to fiure out how to tailor the piece to fit the section titles..."Vision", "Nature", "Parks and Recreation", "Social Services", "Capital Investments", etc.
It actually turned out pretty well, and I cashed the check. And the damned thing is gorgeous embedded by the graphics artists into the pages.
So...Dirty Old Man of Poetry, eh?
There once was a Mom's Middle Finger
whose fine reputation did linger.
Long after his poetry
was only so-soetry
His blues chapped the asses of singers!

(1,013 posts)An "education" used to be learning a little about a lot of things, now its mostly for a job field.
Which of course as a Liberal Arts Major meant its about deleting the Arts for mundane and tangible. Giving up introspection for a dollar sign. Practicality over Love.
Nice to see a little "culture" be snuck in.
