Not sure who here remembers Lisa Welchel, she was on the 70's TV Show 'Facts of Life' and now runs a Christian Mom Blog. One of Ms Welchel's grand suggestions was using hot sauce as a method to punish children.
Former child star Lisa Whelchel advocates hot saucing in her parenting book Creative Correction.[3] In the book, Whelchel claims the practice is more effective and humane than traditional corporal punishments, such as spanking; she repeated this opinion when promoting her book on Good Morning America,[4] where she said in raising her own child she found the technique successful where other measures had failed. Whelchel's book recommends using only "tiny" amounts of hot sauce, and lists alternatives such as lemon juice or vinegar.[2][5]
The practice had also been suggested in a 2001 article in Today's Christian Woman magazine,[6][2][7] Again, only "a drop" is suggested, and alternative substances are listed.
While these publications are credited with popularizing hot saucing,[2] the practice is believed to come from Southern United States culture,[1] where it is well-known among pediatricians, psychologists and child welfare professionals.[2]
They just released the cast for this season of "Survivor" and she's one of the contestants. That woman makes me ill! I can't imagine anyone doing something so cruel as putting hot sauce in a kid's mouth as punishment.

I'd rather drink a bottle of tabasco.

(30,252 posts)Let's see here - good ol' Tabasco, Tapatio, Schilo's, Ass Reaper, Woman Scorned, Holy Jolokia, Santo Scorpio - yes, I have been known to partake of the nectar of the Trinidad scorpion!
Either Welchel's kids are going to grow up with a phobia of hot sauce, or they're gonna be bona fide experts. Frankly, I think there are better ways to discipline unruly children.

(30,252 posts)...there are better ways of disciplining children than this. What if someone held Welchel's mouth open and dripped four drops of Ass Reaper on her tongue? She probably wouldn't appreciate that very much.

(55,007 posts)my kids were eating massive quantities of salsa from the time they started on solid food, so doubt they would have considered something like that a punishment
slavery (hard work) is a MUCH better way to handle unruly rug rats

(36,827 posts)There's just no excuse for it today. Using pain to discipline a child simply teaches them it's OK to inflict pain on someone else when you are mad. It can create problems with rage, self-worth, bullying and it's just not that effective.

(224 posts)I first had jalapenos at age four on some nachos at a baseball game. My dad said he didn't realize they were on them when he gave them to me...I was chowing down and he realized my face was bright red and I was tearing up...and my response was, "I like them." Been eating spicy my whole life pretty much.
I've also liked lemon juice for as long as I can remember. Granted, I'm an adult now, but I've started doing apple cider vinegar drinks and I don't find them nearly as horrifying as most people find them.
