I always use the same starting , and if I have no match, or I get just one yellow and the rest gray I have six backup words, one for each letter and one for no match, all exclusively with letters among the 12 most commonly used in English. It's not foolproof, certainly doesn't keep me from some 5s and 6s, but it gives me a little confidence.
