I had a 2001 Saturn. Blue. Not one single major repair ever. I believe a belt was the most costly thing it ever needed. Unfortunately, I had to give her up during the pandemic. She needed a new battery and new tires for inspection. Couldn't afford it. Landlord wouldn't allow me to keep it and I had no other place to store it, so I donated her. She's probably still happily running somewhere.

I killed it. When we bought another car, I had to have it towed to the dealership. Still had to pay Credit Union the 4,000 I borrowed and more for the new car.

Matter of fact since 1991, I've had exactly 3 cars. All Acura's. The one before this one I had for 14 years, put over 300K miles on it and the biggest repair I ever had was the timing belt around the 1/2 way point. There was broken stuff I never repaired but mechanically the thing was a tank. 1997 Acura CL 3.0. That was a great car.

I've also never bought a new car in my life.

Like you, this is my third Acura in a row, going back to 1987. This one was top of the line so it has a lot of what were innovations back then (side airbags, navigation system, etc.). Will have its first 200k miles in another month or so.

Have had all the required maintenance, including the timing belt. I did have to replace the left front fender. Some hit-and-run AH drove their large truck into it in a parking lot years ago.

The water pump was the only thing past general maintenance. I put a new serpentine belt on and a few weeks later the water pump went. I think I may have over tightened the belt. Aside from that, oil, brakes, tires and fluids.

Last year, the car got hit while parked on the street - hit and run.

The insurance company wanted to total it because of the age. But because of the maintenance records, low miles, and lack of comparables, they relented and fixed it. Valued it at $3400.

Not bad for a 16 yo car.

For insurance, you need to find a comparable replacement car in a reasonably local market.

Because used car prices are higher now, it would cost more to replace the car with a comp than the Blue Book. I think the BB is just used for rip off used car dealers (IMO)

Yes when I get on I-95, aka the Saddle of Love, I am visiting friends/ family and this Lion knows when to slow down when the speed traps are up and running.
Some monitor (hopefully not a lizard) says I should explain myself better. I call it the Saddle of Love because it is the longest stretch of highway that I have to ride so just grin and bear it.
My best memory is following tractor trailers during a horrible blizzard for 200 miles and my pals in the North said I was a true friend making the not recommended 2 hour drive in 10 hours.

My car is 2 years old. Its lease and due to be turned in early next year.
My wife's vehicle is 1 year old. Bought hers new.
My fun car is 0 years old as its on order but not yet built. Scheduled for delivery in in the spring. Originally was going to be this year, but high demand and production delays have delayed things. I had the dealer adjust my order from this year to 2024 for that model year.

Thu Aug 10, 2023, 12:08 PM
Aug 2023

She sees cars as transportation only. Once she is used to it, that's what she sticks with. She doesn't even like driving rentals when we are traveling because she isn't used to the layout of the controls and how it handles, etc. Her previous car got hit and totalled. So we bought a new one of the same model so everything is basically the same.

I, on the other hand, love cars and love driving different ones. So I lease and switch it up every few years.

I just bought a new Equinox Saturday. A month ago, someone backed into my old car in a grocery store parking lot. Not a huge ding, but it was in a bad place on a uni-body panel, couldn't be fixed. Insurance company totaled it out, so wound up getting the new one.

I had the old car, a 2009 Impala, since 2009--fourteen years, 140,000 miles.

I'd had my last car for 10 years when I traded it in for my current car, and I had also bought it used when it was 2 years old.

I may not buy another car if this one lasts for another 5 years. I may just decide to Uber wherever I need to go.

We sold our 1998 Mercury Villager in 2012 after the AC started dying. It wasn't worth it. We took it in for several AC repairs, but it was futile. AC would work for a day or it would barely work. We were told that the engine would likely go next because the engine may have been failing the AC. Who knows. Can't go without AC around here anyway.

A whopping 9 miles per gallon was killer.

If I had to drive in the same remote areas (nothing for forty miles in any direction) I would feel more comfortable driving the old girl rather than some electronically controlled new model that I do not understand. I would have a chance to get the old one going again if it stopped. But it never did.
