(16,678 posts)The smell of patchouli is typically described as a mix of earthy, woody, sweet, and musky scents. The smell of pure patchouli oil is quite strong and is slightly sweet and spicy. It has been described as an intoxicating scent that bears the earthiness akin to the aroma that comes from wet soil.

(5,027 posts)He said I love that smell. I realized that he associated that chlorine pool smell with me. Even today as a geriatric swimmer I still have that aroma if I dont do a good scrub.

I don't know what it reminds me of because I have yet to experience it.

(96,429 posts)One reminds me of childhood and the other reminds of living in the city, also during childhood.
Whenever I smell fish frying in the mornings, I am reminded of my mother's love for salt mackerel. She'd fry some up for her breakfast, since us kids would not touch the stuff. The smell would wake us up and we'd all roll back over because no one wanted to rush to the table for that.
My mom's dead, so smells that bring back memories of her are precious to me. Even when they are bad smells of the mundane.

(96,429 posts)We when went camping as children, we fished for our breakfast (lunch and dinner, too). We had other stuff, but the primary meat was fish.

Whats funny is I wouldn't call that smell necessarily pleasant but at the same time, I love it. Kind of a deja vu thing I guess.

(9,382 posts)Back when I was married some 40 years ago, my wife and I fought fires with the Forest Service. There's nothing like the smell of smoke in a woman's hair in the morning.
A fairly close second place would be patchouli.

(3,458 posts)It was my mother's favorite when I was very young. It brings back to me the smell of her when she picked me up, and I nestled against her. That smell meant safety and unconditional love. She was the best, sweetest, most loving mom, and I will miss her till my last breath.

(26,040 posts)My first Major vacation (2 weeks) was a USA cross-country trip to San Francisco, and L.A. (my cousin was there) from NYC with stops in Arizona (met an also traveling friend and spent 2 1/2 rented car, visiting The Navajo, and Hopi Nations, sleeping overnight in Monument Valley(!!!!!) ), 2 day stay over w my dad's work related friends in ? Albequerque, NM.
What a *glorious* adventure!!!!!
Anyway, a few times I had mild chilli peppers, or powder in dishes. Tasty! I brought home a small bag of NM whole dried chilli peppers.
So, back a week or more later I went and bought some chilli powder first time.
When I opened the bottle, and got the inner seal off and got a whiff ~ I practically saw in front of my eyes The Sourhwest high desert! My goodness, it was amazing!!! 🧡
Also fresh mowed grass. 🧡
Besides the wonderful smell - it reminds me of warm Spring days, and the best of endless Summer weather!
Also when visiting one of my dear cousin's and aunt/uncle's house as a kid/tween we'd sometimes mow the grass with a manual lawnmower.

(10,138 posts)The smell of peaches reminds me of spending summer days at the Jersey Shore at my mom's aunt and uncle's house. They always had peaches in a bowl in their dining room. To this day, when I smell peaches, I think of that house.
