Or who told me that thing yesterday.
Or why I'm standing in the middle of the laundry room with my car keys in my hand.

(7,309 posts)But, I'm not going to do it until the pain gets unbearable. I just can't stomach the thought of implants in my body or the thought of orthopedic surgery after having seen, heard and smelled (yes, bone surgery smells because of the drilling, sawing and chiseling) orthopedic surgery as a student nurse. I shudder.

(7,309 posts)But, I changed my mind because I'm gay and back then, I didn't want any bullshit about it. Turns out I was right to do that. Whatever strides we've made have almost been erased. I love being a nurse. I'm a born care-taker and it's a profession where I can always find a job. Now, I work exclusively with pediatric home health and my knees aren't as much of an issue.

(10,026 posts)I have to say that I can for sure tell I'm slowing down....
My spelling has especially gotten worse (I've never been that great of a speller anyway). And it's not uncommon for me to go into another room and forget what the Hell I went in there for.
99 times out of a 100 when I go back to where I was I'll remember what I was needing to do.
I also get tired more easily. Fortunately, I've ALWAYS been a nap taker. I LOVE my naps! When I wake up I have a new burst of energy. Even when I was in my 20's on my lunch breaks I would normally take a nap when possible. I've done that throughout my life. I take naps almost every day...

2. Food sensitivities. It's a drag that I have to avoid certain ingredients and food items.
3. Gum sensitivities. Cold items really aren't that great anymore, hold the ice in that drink.
4. Temporary Forgetfulness. Why did I walk into this room?
5. Having to say unusual phrases. For example, while turning off the coffee pot before leaving for work, I'll say something off the wall so that I remembered that I turned off the coffee pot before leaving the house. Usually it's "Purple Banana Cheesecake".
6. My 96 year old grandmother not remembering who I am.

(25,355 posts)politics, historical events, or even just clothing fashions and seeing jaws drop in surprise that I am speaking from personal memory and experience, not from reading about it.
Being the last one still alive from my family of origin. Parents, siblings, aunts and uncles, and several older cousins all deceased.
Being the last one left from a local circle of friends. One of them passed away just this year. Her daughter is pregnant now at the same age that her mother was when pregnant for her. Past memories came to me of when her mother was pregnant, how we all used to get together for lunches at a restaurant. The mother was so large that she had to take the outside seat in the booth and turn sideways.
I have some newer friends, but we lack the long shared history of the old ones.
So that's what makes me feel old. But, I also feel young in some ways. I get around better than some people in their 70s. I guess I look younger because people are surprised if they hear my age. It's genetic, apparently. My mother looked younger than her age, too. I still enjoy getting involved in community activities, learning new things, reading, movies, and until recently, bike riding.

Aristus
(71,653 posts)I heard it for the first time on the soundtrack to Baz Luhrman's "Romeo + Juliet" in 1997. I was only twenty-eight. But the song, about the alternating periods of angst and carefree enjoyment of young life, made me instantly feel old. Like those very same emotions had passed me by, and it was time to be a responsible adult.
That feeling hasn't changed now that I'm going on fifty-five.
