(6,011 posts)Good luck! Do you have nearby Craigslist or local town"Patch" to list found dog?
Better to ask someone calling about her to describe her; if her ears are "up"or flopped over, how many large spots, is her tail long or short, because another person who isn't her owner might want to claim her.

(32,084 posts)They tend to have a stockier body. I think there may be some English or German shorthaired pointer in the mix, as well. She sure has a sweet face. Hope you can find out to whom she belongs, Skittles.

(21,849 posts)but not the body, legs, or head.
A cattle dog has shorter legs and its body is not so slim.
The head looks very hound-ish but I don't know hounds well enough to figure out which one.

(50,566 posts)I'm a cat person so I'm no expert, but our friends have a dog with similar coloring that is a Catahoula (not a very common dog, I guess). Just throwing it out there ...
Good luck finding the owners.
Here is an example of a Catahoula:

(64,408 posts)The vet may have a scanner as well. Craigslist might have a posting for a lost dog as well.

(6,011 posts)I don't know if people microchip dogs around there, but that's a possibilty. She looks like a great dog! (I'm partial, we have a Border collie-blue heeler/cattle dog now, and had a Malamute/Australian shepherd-blue heeler)

(6,011 posts)Sally is 11-years-old but still has a more relaxed day when she has her morning fetch session.
This morning I stayed in bed a little longer and she did her usual "I can't wait until you get up" game... look around the house for a toy (her "TireBiter" tire this time), place it on the bed near my feet, stare at it, quivering, until I flip it up and out so she can catch it or fetch it, and repeat...and repeat...and repeat!

(46,179 posts)that have merle coloring. This dog does not look like an Australian cattle dog OR an Australian Shepherd to me. Whatever she is, it's a mix. Catahoula seems to fit best.

(12,296 posts)I have both an ACD and a Catahoula. The dog in the OP is 10x more ACD than Catahoula. You can tell by the tail alone.

(6,011 posts)Another herding dog is an Australian, or German, Koolie- Looks kinda like a combination of ACD and Catahoula.
edit- They are 16"-24" in height at the shoulder. I just measured our Border collie heeler and she's 22".

(46,179 posts)I have an aussie, and my neighbor has cattle dogs.
Cattle dogs are broader, and have much shorter legs, than the pic shown.
That's why I went with the catahoula. At least the conformation is closer. I have to admit, though: I don't know any catahoulas.

(55,010 posts)somebody may have lost a working dog
Skittles
(153,164 posts)according to Tom she is a big lap dog
is that area wide open? - how far apart are the houses? I've seen working cow dogs get lost and wander 5 to 10 miles to the nearest house if they are working in unfamiliar country. They tend to be good natured, especially if they get hauled around to different areas to work and are socialized.

(19,458 posts)Red Heeler for sure, and possible some catahoula.
Sadly, in many ranch areas, you find a lot of border collies and heelers that ran off, and they don't even look for them.

(12,008 posts)I had a dog that looked a lot like that. The other dogs in the litter looked similar, but all were a little different. Every different vet she went to listed her as a different mix.
Good luck finding the owner. It sure is a lovely dog.

(153,164 posts)Tom suspected this dog had been dumped at his farm and he never heard from any owner, but a coworker in Sherman, Texas has now adopted the dog (after hearing about her antics and adorableness from Tom for a couple of weeks) for her two little girls! All is well!!! Thanks everyone for your input! WOOO!!!!

(3,414 posts)A "Red Heeler", as opposed to the "Blue Heeler" which is blue instead of red. I had one a while back. He was the smartest, most loving and loyal dog I ever had. I miss him terribly even now. RIP Max.
