(2,368 posts)We started writing in 1974. I finally made a trip to Japan with the mutual friend who had introduced us. Cherry blossom time is not overrated! My penpal and his wife could not have been more gracious and charming, and it was just such an amazing feeling to meet after all these years! Really jolly and fun.

(25,743 posts)This started last year. So I sent them a card--empty. Got none in return. BUT the hundred dollars I would have sent them I sent to my disabled cousin who bought food to make a traditional Eastern European New Year.-pork, sauerkraut, potatoes and others stuff. The bill came to 100.56 cents. She cried on the phone to thank me. I didn't want thanks. It made me so happen to help her. and her two grandchildren. I am blessed by being able to help her. I never had any of my family thank me. It was something I had in my heart to do for her. I was so overwhelmed, I started to cry.

(23,366 posts)...when 2023 is finally and forever GONE.
Mom died this past February; I've been dealing with her estate ever since. Every day has been a pain in the patoots. The only good day really has been the day I got my new car (after my old one was totalled by my insurance company).
debm55
(25,743 posts)expected to pay for the upkeep of the house and utilities for a house for siblings that seriously abused me. I will cross that bridge when it comes. It will be hard to maintain two houses, taxes, etc. I am glad you had a nice day with your car. Remember that and the joy it brought you. May your New Year be happier and healthier then the one passing.

(86 posts)Im maybe beyond block walking anymore but I can and have done all the other actions you suggest. Ive also cooked and delivered weekly meals for the staff and volunteers at various candidate campaign HQ and performed database updates after phone banking. They really appreciate the home cooked meals because otherwise they just eat pizza and fast food all week.
Was a precinct voting location manager on election days for 20 years until this year when my night vision became too poor to drive in the dark. (I knew I had to give it up when one morning after the time change I was heading to work and didnt see an entire x-country running team crossing the road in front of me until after Id proceeded into the intersection!) Also did voter signature/address verification for the reproduction freedom and recreational pot ballot initiatives for my county Board of Elections in Ohio.
There are lots of ways to get involved in our democracy and helping Ds win and it needs to be all hands on deck for Ds all the way down the ballot in 2024 like never before!

1. Our younger sons wedding to our delightful daughter-in-law. September 8th, which is also my husbands birthday. It was more of a vow renewal, as they actually got married on the same date in 2022, in a small civil ceremony on a beautiful sunny day, in Humboldt Park in Chicago. They did that so my son could be on his wifes health insurance, as he, being a self-employed photographer/videographer, didnt have any. This year, they did the big party, and it was a lot of fun.
2. Adopting a brother-sister pair of Siamese kittens on January 31st. We were down to 2 cats, from a high of 5 and 2 didnt feel like enough. Having had blue-eyed cats before (2 ragdoll mixes, and a lynx point Siamese), I was missing having blue-eyed cats in the family, so that hole in my heart has been filled.

(24,109 posts)Ive tried and tried to find a good explanation for it, and the closest I can get is that its almost like theres a little human spirit in there looking out at you.
That probably sounds weird. Some things are really hard to describe.

(34,525 posts)An adoption that would work out for nearly 9 years. With each foster home they grew less fearful and more cuddly. Their new family loves them to pieces.
The day itself was painful, as adoption days always are because I love my fosters,, but the rest of the year is so good because they finally have the life they deserve.
