(24,906 posts)Not anything of great value, mostly just ones I find at yard sales or thrift shops. Some are from memorable places I have been, like cruise ships, etc.
I have about 100 of them. They have been boxed up for about eight years because downsizing didn't allow room to display them. In recent years I have been getting some of them out at Christmas time and display them with each holding an ornament. Right now they are sort of on my list to become a casualty of my current downsizing, but I'm not sure yet.

(24,906 posts)They'll probably stay boxed up in the storage shed for now. Even when I had room, I displayed them, my wife tolerated them. She does like them as Christmas decorations, though.

(28,447 posts)I do understand not being able to keep thousands of items around, which is why I have trouble understanding why someone would collect so much stuff that it has to be kept in a storage unit.
I want you to realize that I know that what works for you (keeping things in storage) has zero to do with what works for me (having my stuff where I can see it). It's not as though one of us must be wrong and the other must be right. It's far more that each person understand or figure out what works for them.

And I am glad I bought them (have roughly 400 of them), a guy was wanting to sell his collection of lunchboxes and didn't want to break his collection up into pieces (I wanted only the Disney ones).
So I ended up buying all of them. For the most part, I viewed them strictly as an investment (and they are really), but I do sometimes enjoy sitting down, and just look at them, study the Thermos too, etc.

(88,922 posts)Well, probably the most enduring is my rock collection. I think I started collecting rocks when I was old enough to pick one up. Always fascinated by them. And if there are fossils in them, so much the better! I have one that a friend named the Oyster Stew Rock because of all the (what looks like) oyster shells in it. Ive got a rock from the top of Pikes Peak. Ive got one that has all these long slender air bubble vents in it. Got chunks of obsidian, and fossils, and quartz crystals, single and in clusters and many different color shadings. I took the best ones with me when we moved, and theyre in my garden now.

(17,757 posts)I got into pendulum clocks when I found one at a yard sell for nearly nothing, and after a few hours of tinkering I got it working. I was hooked. I know next to nothing about clock repair, but people abandon them when they stop, usually for the lack of a cleaning or just leveling.
My father gave me my first knife when I was six years old. They are the most useful tool man has ever made. If I have my pants on, I will have a good, razor sharp, knife in my pocket. To me knives are tools, not weapons. When I was in school in the late 50s and 60s, all of the boys carried a pocket knife at our school, nobocy ever got cut, and there was no knife vandalism. It the teacher needes something cut, she would ask, and we would vie for the honor of her using our knife. Different times.
The strangest collection I ever saw was at an antique shop. It was a very nicely displayed collection of condoms. (new ones in the foil packaging.) I always wondered who you would show it off to....

I HAD to stop as I was running out of room and it got expensive. Plus since I left.in the box I couldn't enjoy them. I gave them to Children's Hospital near Pittsburgh. But it does look like you hit the jackpot this Christmas. Where do you put all the stuff. My birth family doesn't believe in giving gifts at Christmas as it' s Jesus' birthday not theirs--some grifter religion they now belong to.I sent them a card, card none in return, My husband got me a new computer and chair. Hope you new year was great. Love, deb.
Niagara
(11,422 posts)I'm actually running out of room. I do have a plan that I made before New Year's and I just need to follow through my plan.
My downfall is that I'm excellent at finding bargains. In the beginning of summer of 2023, I found a set of 1960's Inarco nylon butterflies for 0.25 cents each, so I paid 0.50 for the pair. A cross seller on Etsy and Ebay has this pair listed for about $29.99.
I found a Herbolzheim cake stand for $5 at a garage sale. The same patterned cake plate is listed on Etsy for $98, so I'm not sure what the value of it is. I also found some fantastic Indiana Glass at this same garage sale and went back the following day to purchase more Indiana Glass as the price was right. I didn't buy the stuff for potential value, I bought it because of it's beauty.
Yeah for your husband getting you a new computer and chair! I also got a new computer chair as mine permanently broke right before Halloween.
So far, so good for the New Year. I hope yours was fantastic!
Love, Niagara.

A model 128 from the early 1920's:

A model 503A from the 1950's:

A model 15-91 from the 1930's:

Plus a nice Sears Kenmore 158.1755 from the late 1960's:

I would collect more but I've run out of room. I've got them all working, but my favorites are the 301A for straight stitching and the Kenmore for zigzag. Made lots of masks for my neighbors when the pandemic hit.

(28,447 posts)Connie Willis also collects sewing machines. Even though Connie has stated loudly and often at cons (I have become friends with both of them, since I see them regularly at cons at least twice, sometimes four times a year) NOT to give Courtney any more old sewing machines, I was at an auction at ConQuest in Kansas City a couple of years ago, and an amazing old sewing machine was on offer. I was able to outbid everyone. When I won, I stood up and let them all know that I'd be giving it to Courtney Willis.
They all, of course, knew who he was. Probably most of you reading this have never before heard of him, but if you feel like googling "Connie Willis" you can at least learn something about her.
Well, I gave it to Courtney the next time I saw him, and at the next con we were both at, he had that machine and a couple of others and gave a talk about them. I learned a LOT about sewing machines from him that day.

(15,673 posts)I try to collect as many smashed pennies (where you put a penny into a machine that you crank, and it elongates and stamps a design on it) as there are in the area (got at least 20 going up Pikes Peak, stopping at various gift shops at different elevations). I also will get a Christmas ornament, fridge magnet, and t-shirt from each trip (not every place I visit on said trip).
I've always kept my t-shirts - I'm 51 and even had one from my high school days. I say had because I've cut up a bunch of them (including that one) and am now in the process of making five different t-shirt quilts of different themes.
Over my twenty years of entertaining as a side business and have made nearly 90 vests in various patterns for everyday entertaining and then holiday-themed ones - more than I need, but y'know, COVID lockdowns. I needed something to do.
