27. See my thinking below.

Scene, sense, suede or segue were the words I was considering for my third guess. I decided to try sense first. If the second letter was e-- but the word wasn't sense-- then I would try segue. If the second letter wasn't e, but elsewhere and there was an n, then the next guess would be scene. No n, then suede.

Method to my lucky guess was thinking of as many possibilities as I could and then analyzing which word to try first that would eliminate others.

Doubling letters is against the grain for me. Your ability to break thru that barrier was the bold part to me. I would have been eliminating more letters with the other guesses first and not words altogether. I like your approach as it would really pay off in those multiple choice pattern traps.
