How did you find you way to DU? Edit, that was in 2004. I did lurk for a long time and just read.

(24,504 posts)What I am trying to remember is....how did I get to Bartcop? Amazing to think back when he did a 1 person orchestration of a lot of different things in 2nd gen webpage format. He loved Garbage (whom I never really listened to), his favorite tequila, and just a lot of smart posts that I could say, I absolutely thought correct. Did he have a posting forum? If he did, I was never a poster there.

(24,300 posts)They had a section for politics, religion and controversy. It made Stormfront look like Romper Room. They have actually been visited by the Secret Service for some of the threats that appear on that website. I spent several years just diving in and being one of the few progressives in a field of thousands of insane wingnuts.
What I did for sport is to goad people into posting things that will get them banned. It was kinda fun sometimes. Anyway, this place got mentioned there pretty often. Some of their members came here and didn't last more than a few hours before MIRT nailed them. (Nice work, MIRT) I started lurking here then finally joined over ten years ago.
I still post over there, their Off Topic section is well policed for political content and some of the people there are really funny. I've met several of them and think of them as friends if their politics aren't too crazy.

(261 posts)My Marine son was deployed to Iraq at the time, and I was so angry with Bush and the Republicans. I listened to Thom Hartmann and others to help me deal with my anger. I think Air America still existed at the time. When Thom mentioned a site called Democratic Underground, it sounded like the perfect place for me. I don't speak up much, but I am on Democratic Underground several times a day. It helps to be around other people who share my beliefs, even if it is via the Internet.

Surfing the net, looking for anyone who felt the way I did.
Saw the democraticunderground.com link. Clicked it, and the rest is history.
Lurked until October, 2001, then joined.

(13,107 posts)I was posting on Huffington Post and I asked if there was website for Democratic and Progressive views.
Someone suggested Democratic Underground and I never looked back either.
I have learned so much from the posters on Democratic Underground !!!!!!!

(7,625 posts)Back in the day, a page would "like" another Facebook page and they would share content. If I remember correctly it was Occupy Democrats and Lucid Nation. This was before Facebook was Putinized.
Also through Facebook, I discovered in a upcoming local Niagara County election that some bozo was running on a Democratic ticket and wasn't actually Democratic at all while pushing Trumpian like talking points. If it hadn't been for Facebook and this bozo's public talking points on their Facebook page, I would have made a colossal mistake and voted for said bozo.

(14,906 posts)because I had sooo many things to follow on line and no computer at home - I soon forgot about it.
I more casually looked at over time Huffpo, Daily K, BuzzFeed.... a few others
Then when my music site w Off-topic politics sub forum was not imho paying enough attention about something: somehow I remembered DU's name.
I googled and behold all these years later it was thriving.
I joined, and never looked back. 👍🙂

(55,011 posts)also got me my first deleted post.
I was arguing politics on a local server when I first got on the internet, didn't have tee vee so didn't know any of the talking heads. This bozo had the hots for her, even met her on an elevator one time LOL. I was looking her up (did google even exist back then?) and found the top 10 biggest idiots here and started looking around. that and Bob Boudelang got me hooked. I read the latest page but stayed mostly in the lounge and still do.
I was on dial up back then, posted something about her being a skank and it got deleted as being misogynistic and had some other posts deleted while I was having a real slow conversation with the moderators. eventually I proved my point that skank wasn't always sex-specific but the slow dial-up almost got me banned because I didn't get the messages or reply fast enough.

(74 posts)He was a high profile evangelical preacher who got outed for hiring gay sex partners. Not a scandal or anything to be ashamed of unless youre preaching about gays going to hell and such, as he was. So a huge hypocrite. This was in 2006. The comments were seemingly endless and really hilarious. Anyway, a DU member named Hepburn linked DU in one of her comments. So I went to take a look and have been lurking ever since, until I finally joined this year. I havent seen Hepburn post anything in a long time, but would like to thank her for opening up this world of like minded people to me.

(7,633 posts)non anonymous accounts. I do not want my political opinions to be used against me in my personal life especially from a post on an internet forum. I have a high profile public job.

(90,712 posts)When DU got hacked in 2016, a note pinned to our poor maimed site directed us to FaceBook. That was a great consolation, but the lack of anonymity was jarring, and the lack of the usual DU community structure was as well. Fairly soon some guy jumped all over me for my opinions and I admit one of my first thoughts was to wonder if he was going to follow me home, so to speak.

His retort to one of my comments was Got your talking points straight off Democratic Underground, did you ?
So of course I had to come here and check it out!
