(5,200 posts)Modern crime shows rely too much on sickening 'realism' for my taste. I have been watching GET TV lately, catching up on Mickey Spillane's Mike Hammer, Kojak, Quincy, and Rockford.
Maybe an oldie I can't get into: Magnum, PI. Hot girls AND a Ferrari, and I still can't watch it after all these years.

(27,863 posts)I avoid those shows and it really makes me mad that they run their grisly ads during other shows I watch, especially sports.

(8,115 posts)Any and all supposed "reality shows". I think they're scripted or at least there's a plan on what's supposed to happen. In any case, they make me sick to my stomach. It's the dumbing down of America.
It actually saddens me that people watch those! I have a dislike for Andy Coen anyway and one of the reasons is he's responsible for giving us The Housewives shows. I mean the entire premise is to get people to tear each other down...WTF is wrong with people????????????

the least fixed . What they do fix is having only people that can afford to be off of work that long. I don't watch or did I ever watch any besides the Amazing Race.

(65,466 posts)In today's viewing environment, I'm not convinced it would be generating any buzz.
The fascination with the show was, in part, that ut was what was on!
When it started, only around 14 million households had cable, and a high % was still using RF conversion, so people still only had 12 channels tops.
Yeah, by the time the show ended there were 50+ million households with probably 60 or more channels, but people were used to watching it.
I think it would be just another show today.

And I hate to point out, Bonanza, even though well loved - wasn't really terribly strong in any department
(have to add - expectations weren't all that high for earlier TV - Honeymooners, Bewitched , I Love Lucy .. ? )

(7,682 posts)I can remember in the early days of the show, CBS would carry content advisories on it and that was why I liked to watch it--I felt like I was getting away with something I shouldn't be doing. Nowadays, I can't make myself watch most of the reruns of "AITF"--I just find Archie too annoying.

(347 posts)but it was also true of that whole franchise of shows that were developed from Dallas. They were all over-rated soap-operas. A bunch of people made a bunch of money from prime time soaps

(52,511 posts)Fans get irate when a character does something, well, out of character, despite the fact that real humans defy stereotypes and their own habits all the time (if only briefly or occasionally)
Personally found BBT very relatable, as I share traits with nearly all the main characters. But after a while, it became stale and formulaic.
Moreover, at first I felt I was laughing at myself, but later, I felt I was being made fun of.

(2,000 posts)In a 5 season span from 1980 to the end of the 1984-85 season, Dallas was the number #1 show in the Nielsen ratings 3 times. The other two seasons, it was rated #2.
It was on Friday nights for all but one season of its run (1978-1991) and Friday night is not a big night traditionally for TV viewing.
It spawned a successful spinoff, Knots Landing which enjoyed a 14-season run from 1979-1993 and was a Thursday night staple.
I was a loyal watcher of the show (along with Falcon Crest) until after season 9 when Patrick Duffy was convinced to return after the show started to slip from its traditional top rating. This was where they had to erase the death of his character by explaining away season 9 as a dream by Pam.
Still, the show survived for 14 seasons and over 350 episodes. And Larry Hagmans J.R. Ewing will always be one of TVs all-time great villains.

(9,990 posts)... "Dallas" was nicely done. I would say very good, but no masterpiece. Of that genre, I liked "Knotts Landing" best. I think "I Love Lucy" is one of the best TV shows ever... I still laugh out loud! I'm seeing people post and say on talk shows that certain old shows are "classics" and worthy of adulation. There are so many... I wonder if "old" just turns into "classic" and becomes "excellent" by just being old? One example... "The Brady Bunch" - it has become greater than it was, just by getting old. I did like the performances of the parents - they hinted at a playful sexiness that was never vulgar, which I didn't see in a lot of TV couples. They did a good job with the material - they all did, but the show wasn't a masterpiece. I won't name more... don't want to put down stuff... but I think a lot of shows have become "overrated" by simply getting old.
Made up my mind about it in the first ten minutes I saw it.
Never again saw any more.

I watched this video about Brazilian Butt Lifts and I just sighed as the overly cosmetically enhanced Kards most likely helped made this cosmetic procedure viral by targeting their audience.
I've never watched this show, I have no desire to watch this show.
How it's been allowed to be aired for as long as it has is beyond me.

(1,886 posts)of MASH was televised, the ER waiting room (which had the TV) was packed with medical personnel - surgeons just out of the OR, nurses and physicians crowded in, the ER staff were in there - there was no room to sit, people were leaning against the walls or crouching...and everyone was silent. There were some teary eyes at the end.
For people working in this busy charity hospital, MASH felt very real.
