6. Ground-Dogs!

My niece (now 24) used to call them "ground dogs" when she was a little girl...so, now that's what I call them. I have two that are perpetually digging up around my flower gardens/house foundation. My neighbors, many of them horse people, told me to kill them (due to the holes they dig that can break the horses' legs). I don't have the heart to kill them...and listening to them squeal is hysterical. Talk about tenacious little beasts. They are.

7. The only way to keep them out of your garden is by digging a strong metal fence down about 16 inches all around ii.

That plus a tight fitting, sturdy gate.
I have groundhogs all over the yard, but none in the vegetable garden for 20 years now.
It helps that there's a lot to eat in our yard...plenty of broad leaf weeds, and other stuff they love to eat.

Brussels sprouts plants to our neighbor last year. Just as they were beginning to produce, a ground hog came and stripped them bare. They are cute critters, but when you put that much into a garden and have it destroyed is awful!

8. A family of groundhogs is a family of weed whackers in a garden

When a buried fence failed to keep the little bastards out, I sprayed everything down with a cayenne pepper/dish soap solution, reapplied after rain, and went looking for the den. When I found it, I prevailed upon a neighbor with a new baby to give me a few used Pampers, which I stuffed into the main entrance of the den. Yes, I went nuclear, I didn't care how cute they are.

They decamped to a new den. Since damage to neighbors' gardens decreased, I have to hope their new den was in an area with plentiful wild foods, the area abounded with things like bush blueberries.

9. The frustrating part

is when they just take chunks out of different vegetables without even eating the whole thing. A nibble here, a nibble there. I suppose they think they are leaving the rest for the humans to eat.
