Of course, I was never a fan of Star Wars stuff; I watched two of the movies I think, somewhat under protest, a couple of decades ago.

To be perfectly honest, I never really got the point of the whole thing, if in fact, there was a point.
I certainly needed to be reminded that the phrase was 'May the force be with you."
"The Force" from what I gather is some kind of metaphysical thing, that is a religion.
I don't, in general, do quasi- or real religious thinking well.
I guess it did seriously launch the acting career of Harrison Ford, and I've enjoyed his acting here and there.

The underlying power of The Force (more understandable with its original name, The Force Of Others) is to weld together the will of people cooperating for a common cause, usually a mutually beneficial one. It heightens and strengthens individual and collective courage, empathy, and strength. Those who understand the protective nature of these attributes frequently offer to friends and loved ones the benediction "May The Force Be With You."
A Force-sensitive person who uses those powers for selfish reasons or personal gain is said to have fallen to the Dark Side of The Force.
People who want the benefits that come with Force-belief without understanding the importance of the sacrifices and collective effort that The Force responds best to, often use the declarative "The Force Is With Us", rather than the aspirational "May The Force Be With Us."

(14,272 posts)As you say, just a silly Star Wars joke. I like the franchise and I chuckled the first time I heard May the 4th be with you. May 4th is now a day that Star Wars fans celebrate by binging on the movies, going to conventions, etc.

(66,775 posts)I hope you will read my post about The Force above. I wrote that without notes or consulting any Star Wars lore. Even though I know Star Wars, The Force, and everything else, are fictional, I do draw some inspiration from the meaning behind The Force. A lot of people do, and have adopted The Force as a kind of secular religion. It allows people to celebrate and acknowledge each other's essential goodness and desire for brotherhood without the often arbitrary strictures of conventional religions.
I draw more inspiration and courage from someone saying to me "May The Force Be With You" than I ever did when someone said "God Be With You" or "God Bless You."
