slice and lettuce.

(32,291 posts)the Dietz & Watson Natural Angus Roast Beef? I love all their products, they can be a bit pricey, but the quality is good. I cant stand cheap deli meat.

(2,582 posts)But definitely with you on turning down cheap deli meat. That Black Forest turkey tastes like ham but I tell myself the turkey is better for me.

(102,666 posts)A good quality turkey with lettuce a little mayo and tomato works too.
I do like Killer Dave's breads, though.

And - never could tolerate butter over bread ... Fine in all other domains - but should never come close to an untoasted slice of bread! It's a rule.

(5,868 posts)The alternative if I don't have lettuce is avocado, which makes the sandwich a BAT. I actually haven't made one of these for many years so my usual sandwich that I take to work is smoked ham, swiss, and mustard on artisan bread. At home I prefer a mackeral or herring sandwich with a bit of mustard on the bread.

(2,287 posts)...that's when you have two slices of bread and you WISH you had something to put between them... (been there)
Nowadays I can afford better than mayo bologna and iceberg lettuce, so firstly
The bread is important. Most american sponge bread doesn't add a lot of worthwhile flavor to
your bread and salad mix (what a sandwich is. add meat = chef's salad).
That bread as toast is fine, but real bread will add immeasurably to your enjoyment...
So here's my sandwich: back when, my wife and I used to do "Syrian Tacos" using 10" Syrian
bread, cutting them each in half to make two pockets and filling them with refried beans, salsa roja,
diced onions, tomatoes, green peppers, mushrooms, jalapeno slices, shredded cheese and alfalfa sprouts.
Trust me when I tell you this puts a taco to shame.

Of course, finding the perfect tomato is a crap shoot, but I'd still eat that tomato sandwich.

I'll just have to go to Sprouts and Whole Foods and hope for the motherlode of perfect tomatoes.

My father remembered lard sandwiches... bread, lard, bread.
He said bread only cost 10 cents a loaf but you only earned a dollar a day.
