The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsJust wondering, how many people here have gas stoves vs. electric stove .
The old houses in my neighborhood have gas, the townhouses are total electric.
I wouldn't have a electric stove or hot water heater.
During hurricanes having a gas stove is import.
The stove top is still there, just light a match.

I cooked a roast on the stove top.

(11,065 posts)But even though I can't use the oven I never really use it much anyway. Of course, in a power outage I can't use the microwave or the toaster oven either which is what I normally would use. At least I can use the range though so I'm not stuck with just tuna fish and peanut butter.

(47,675 posts)Besides, you can't control the temperature on an electric stove. They're too arbitrary and don't have a simmer setting. I hate those fuckers. On top of that, when you turn off a gas burner, it's off - period. On an electric you have to move the pot to another burner and then you've got a circular branding iron waiting to fuck someone up. Electric stoves are evil.

(12,132 posts)I have a hybrid Char-Griller grill outside that has gas on one side (with a full bottle right now) and charcoal on the other (running low in the briquet bucket though...need to hit up lump wood charcoal store)

(18,705 posts)That is what people used before central heat.
Talk about keeping you warm.
I like my gas stoves period.

(18,219 posts)Unfortunately it is in the basement, so I would have to huddle up in the basement to stay warm.

I really loved that old house
texanwitch
(18,705 posts)There is a place in Houston that sells and repairs them.
The store has some really old ones for sell.
I have a big one, and a small one.
The big one will heat up several rooms.
Old houses have gas jets to hook them up to.

(32,085 posts)I wish I had gas. If I thought I was going to stay in this house, and I had the funds for it, I would have a gas stove installed. This place has a gas water heater and gas heat. I don't know why they didn't pipe it to the stove, as well.

(18,705 posts)Wood stoves were the things you had.
Gas was a impovement.
All the really old houses here had fireplaces.
Most of them are gone now.
My neighborhood goes back to the 1880's.
Really before that, farmers lived here, raised cattle.
marzipanni
(6,011 posts)bought by DH's grandfather in 1938, for the house we live in, which he built in 1917. No electricity needed to light, but the pilot lights make the kitchen warmer, and waste gas. I always leave the kitchen window open at the top when the evening/nights cool down so the refrigerator doesn't work harder.
Every night the last thing I do before I go to bed is check the stove/oven knobs to make sure they're all on "off".
The house I grew up in had an electric stove; I preferred gas stoves after the first time using one!

(59,440 posts)I grew up cooking on gas so electric is a challenge. Food tastes better cooked on gas, too.

(18,705 posts)I cooked it slow in my old cast iron stewpot.
We had a reall nice meal that night.
Love my gas stove.

(21,020 posts)on a gas stove...the best.
I've even used my cast iron dutch oven in my countertop oven for casseroles and such.
Cooks way faster, and stays warm a long time.

(11,065 posts)Especially for griddle type foods like pancakes, grilled cheese or omlets. I can never get the tempurature figured out right.

(33,688 posts)I moved into last spring has a gas stove. Turn the heat up, it's instantly hotter. Turn it down and it's instantly less hot. I love to cook, but have hated trying to cook seriously on electric stoves for years. You're never sure what the temp is on an electric stove. Not that I am anywhere near the hurricane, but my $.02.
Also have gas heat and hot water.

(5,364 posts)Gas stoves are too smelly for my taste.
I know I don't have the power-off utility that a gas one would but I don't use the thing much anyway. I'm a grilling fool....over charcoal of course.

(115,719 posts)I grew up with an electric stove, but once I had my own place (which came with a gas stove) I discovered gas was the way to go. When it's on it's on; when it's off it's off. And you can see when a burner is on. I think it's both easier and safer to cook with.

(12,022 posts)I'm very VERY afraid of fire. I know the stove isn't dangerous, but every time I turn on a burner my heart kinda jumps waiting for the fire to start. And the smell of the gas scares me.
Maybe if I'd grown up with a gas stove I'd feel better about it. And maybe if I hadn't lost everything to a fire once.
pipi_k
(21,020 posts)it's a big advantage when there's a power outage.
I also have a couple of those old aluminum percolator coffee pots and a French press for when the electric one is powerless.
Nobody screws with my morning coffee!

(18,219 posts)I lived in an all electric subdivision in Houston during the hurricane I went through, and was without power for 8 days. I had to use my barbecue grill and a propane stove for all my cooking. I never want to be in that situation again.

(2,682 posts)power outages. I'm not sure what the power company has done, but we have few outages and they don't last but a few minutes. Even a couple of winters ago when a nearby community was out for 7 hours, we were out for less than an hour.
Electric stove/oven; gas hot water and heat. The problem with the heat is that it takes an electric thermostat to turn it on and an electric fan to circulate it.
Years ago I used to keep a cord or so of wood around. We have used the fire place for cooking and heating when desperate. However, now, with so few outages, I don't keep any fire wood around at all. We never use the fire place anyway.
