Old Appalachian beliefs. The last rumble of thunder in September.

Means six weeks until the first snow fall. I heard thunder Thursday Dunc the golden chonk came to me seeking protection.

1. We had thunder last night in Durham, NC

But we're about 225 miles from the Blue Ridge and Great Smoky Mountains that are part of the Appalachians. Does that count? We've had snow in early December here ...had a terrible snow/ice storm in December 2003. It was a week before our power was restored.

3. Another Appalachian belief is that if a snapping turtle bites you

it can't (or won't) turn you loose until it hears thunder, so I guess that's good news for anyone who got bitten by one on Thursday!

I'll add it to my collection of lore.

I heard that you can predict what kind of winter it'll be by looking at the wooly worms. If they have more black than brown, the winter will be worse.

My Mom, who was born and raised in Cleveland, told me the frogs had to be frozen out 3 times before Spring was really here. I told one of my friends and she said, "I didn't know frogs could count!" Laughed myself silly
