Musings: Phone ring intervals: J'ever notice........?

I'm talking land-line home phones with the standard bell or electronic rings:

J'ever notice that if you are in a different room and/or there is some activity causing background noise and then you thought you just heard the phone ring? Then you suddenly freeze and stop whatever you're doing and listen intently for the phone...and then the interval between phone rings goes from the usual 3 seconds to what seems like a decade?

Drives me nuts. What's weird to is that some sounds, or combinations of sounds ( example: running water and the air conditioning/heat blower ) seem to make me hear things and somehow mimic and yet mask the sound of a ringing phone.

Anyway, got a load off my mind...........
