Is my coworker full of nonsense?

She states that she's not permitted to have any carbs for six months because of an upcoming medical procedure.

What the hell is she talking about?

I'd ask her, but she tends toward the dramatic, so she might simply be making it up in hope of someone asking her about it.

Or does it sound legit?

Another coworker suggested that she might be prepping for a gastric bypass or the like, but I've known more half a dozen people who've undergone that procedure, none of whom were on a restricted diet for the six months preceding the surgery.

Any guesses?

If she's overweight, sounds reasonable. NOT a medical opinion! elleng Jan 2012 #2
maybe what her doctor told her was that she had to lose weight before a procedure could be done. suninvited Jan 2012 #3

for the drama. I do that sometimes just to entertain myself. Plus, you will force her to give you something to go on, bullshit or not bullshit.

and her choice to lose weight was by carb restriction.

Or maybe not.

I work with a pathological liar who entertains us all with her stories. We pretend to believe her, I don't know why.

Because most foods have at least some carbs and it would probably be unhealthy if not fatal to only eat them. I don't know why 6 months of any strict diet would be required for any procedure unless it is about losing a lot of weight, 50 or more pounds.

Even a lot of vegetables have carbohydrates. Plus, they're sort iof necessary to live.

Sounds like she got things mixed up. Probably she was instructed not to have SIMPLE carbs.

The most likely explanation is that she has simply been advised to lose weight before the procedure. Recovery from many medical procedures is better if you are not overweight, so this could be sensible advice.

Not having ANY carbs, however, seems unlikely. The only thing I can think of is the Atkins Diet induction phase; but that is only recommended for two weeks, not six months. Indeed, though most of us eat too much carbohydrate, restricting it altogether for six months would be rather dangerous for most people.

But I am not a doctor, and don't know what procedure she's having, so it's all just a guess.
