DU3 Album of the Day:

Last edited Wed Jan 4, 2012, 03:27 PM - Edit history (1)

An album that reminds us all that once upon a time MTV used to show music videos, including The Greatest Music Video of All Time, Peter Gabriel's "Sledgehammer"* featuring (and be still, all our hearts) DANCING CHICKENS!!

In addition, there are several poignant songs that could melt even a Republican's heart. Gabriel is joined by the incomparable Kate Bush on "Don't Give Up" and by performance artist Laurie Anderson (remember her?) on "This Is The Picture." I can listen to "In Your Eyes" about 372 times in a row before I get a little tired of it.

Track listing on my personal CD (included tracks and track order varied between vinyl, cassette and CD in a way that is probably endlessly fascinating for some particularly obsessed fans, and they're invited to post such inane ramblings without getting personal):

1."Red Rain"
2."Sledgehammer"
3."Don't Give Up" (featuring Kate Bush)
4."That Voice Again"
5."Mercy Street"
6."Big Time"
7."We Do What We're Told (Milgram's 37)"
8."This Is the Picture (Excellent Birds)"
9."In Your Eyes" – 5:27

is more common than one might think.

This particular album is in my Top 5 All-Time Favorites.

'In Your Eyes" and "Don't Give Up"....can't say enough good things about those two tunes. The first time I heard "Don't Give Up" it brought a tear to my eye, probably because I could relate to it so well-- I was "between jobs" (as we used to say) and had mouths to feed besides my own.

But qualitatively, it's damn near flawless. What can you say about an album the hit singles of which are the crappiest songs on it?

(Did that question make sense to anyone but me? Obviously not an English major!)

This song was being played in the background of a music warehouse store (remember those?) as I was checking out. Took about two steps outside and turned right around to purchase the album just based on this hauntingly beautiful song. "So" still plays in heavy rotation on my ol' iPod.

But how does the command "red" translate to "baby shit green" in the DU3 color palette? Same way "black" becomes "pale baby shit green" I suppose.

Anyway, I echo the point that the singles from this album are probably the weakest songs on it. This album is highly listenable from beginning to end, and the tracks that struck me as ordinary on the first times through come back to become favorites.
