It's been my experience that talking and discussing things never accomplishes anything, and it never changes people's minds on the matter.
So I often wonder why bother to talk or discuss things at all when it's useless to do so.
Nobody changes anything, and the only thing that happens is more and more resentment.
Maybe this world would be better off if everybody would be segregated according to their beliefs.
I sometimes get the feeling that's what people really want anyway. It certainly seems that with all the bigotry and the hostility between the people that that is where this world is heading too, and that nobody really wants to learn how to overcome their petty differences

(719 posts)I believe that we search for understanding for the same reason we (well, some of us) buy Lotto tickets:
Because if you don't play, you can't win.
Or maybe it's like panning for gold....you'll sift through tons of dirt hoping to get some color....but when you do...it's worth it.
It's either that or just say 'fuggit' and resign yourself to a lifetime of aggravation. I like to think my expectations are just a little bit higher than that.

Do you like sunflowers, Quartermass?

(41,960 posts)See, I'm a therapist, and my job is to talk to people and help them change things. It can be very hard, because we think what we think for extraordinarily complicated reasons, some of which we're terrified of changing. The talking part isn't so hard. It's the listening part, hearing that people really do feel what they feel and believe what they believe and it can cause awful problems for them and others.
I've seen many, many individuals and couples learn to talk and listen to one another rather than just to their fears. Does the sun come out and everyone sing kumbaya? Nope. It's a messy world. But people can learn to accept one another and enjoy one aonther, even when they don't agree. And sometimes things change a lot.
Sounds like it's got on your last nerve, though, and I so understand that! Me too sometimes.
