Here I am accessing the Intertubes at the library again. At least I have my own laptop, so...

.
.
.
... I'm not limited to an hour or less.
.
.
.
Cox is saying it's our modem and suggesting that we buy a new one... and if that doesn't
work, they'll send out a tech (all at our expense). If the modem were on a buyback option --
where they'd buy it back if it proved not to be the problem, I could see that.
.
Funny thing, our landlord down the block has been having connectivity problems starting
at the same time ours did (though not as horrendous). He also has another modem he's
gonna let us try out first - the purchase of the modem would be on him. I talked to my
longterm housemate about this -- if the landlord doesn't take this seriously, he will know
how serious WE'RE taking it when the rent comes due on the 1st.
.
Since Saturday, we've only been able to connect between 15 minutes and 6 hours (today,
in two 3-hour sessions) per day... and ALL that connectivity time has been between 2 AM
and 9 AM -- we've been unable to connect from 9 AM until 2 AM at all.
.
If it were a problem at OUR end -- why is that timing so consistent? Why wouldn't bugs
in our modem hit us sporadically THROUGHOUT the day?
.
I think they're experiencing a problem and they don't want it to get publicity -- they've
learned from long-lasting connectivity problems they've had in the past.
.
.
.
But that's just the liberal corporation-doubting Thomas in me, no?
.
.
.
I didn't stop for a cellphone last night -- ran late with my Dr.'s appointment and was very
tired -- even caught a cab home rather than face the fairly lengthy walks the bus would
have required of me.
.
Still regaining strength and motivation today.
.
Sometimes I miss knowing meth-heads.

2. That stinks. Of course it's YOUR modem's problem when you ain't renting it from the bastids.

Easy way out for them to blame it.

Can you borrow a known working one from somebody to see if the problem goes away before you shell out the bucks for a new one?

4. Best we have is the landlord's to try -- neither he nor we know other Cox suckers.

Actually, with a couple MAJOR poor-to-no-service episodes, they're usually pretty good
and we're not suckers for having the service -- though I get the feeling they're playing
us for suckers with these current "fix" suggestions -- they all seem to have to do with
our spending more money with them to fix THEIR lack of service.

7. Well I'd try the landord's out first. The odds of both of your modems being shot are low.

Hopefully you've got an accomodating landlord. Mine's horrible, this is what I got today: "You got the rent money yet"? I say "No, can't find no job, therefore I ain't got no money to pay the rent" She said "I don't believe you're tryin' to find no job, I seen you today you was standin' on a corner, leaning up against a post". I said "But I'm tired, I've been walkin' all day". She said "That don't confront me, long as I get my money next Friday".

3. I rent a modem from Comcast, and they're always a huge POS.

I have to replace it every couple of years. When it starts to go, it works, then it doesn't, then it does, then it doesn't.

However, if someone with a different modem in a different house is having the same problem at the same times that you are, I would think that it would be a Cox network issue. (I work for a Cox subsidiary, but can't access cable info - sorry.)

I don't do well when I'm not able to be online. I work in an office, but I do online sales. My company provides a desktop in the office and a smart phone. I own a personal smart phone, and have a desktop and laptop at home. I'm not on DU all the time, but I'm always connected to something.

6. It may be the modem

But I doubt it, I go through this with our company as well. Knock on wood haven't' had an issue for months. They always say its us first an then we have to schedule a service call yada yada. My favorite is: "We don't have any other complaints in the area so it must be you or we aren't showing any outages in that area". At that point I call my brother who lives several block away and make him call in. And low and behold it works and we still have the same modem we have had since the beginning and it several years old I am thinking at least 8-10 yrs.

Are you using cable or dsl?
How about wireless? Are you getting the router just not getting out on the net?
I have gone through a few routers in that time--at least 3

Just thinking about some of the things I have had to go through. I saw the cable truck down several houses one day and he finished up, our cable, internet and phone went out as he was packing up to leave. Of course we flagged him down and made him put it back...and he had no idea that whatever he did knocked us off down the street.

Hopefully they fix it soon. I have Time Warner and it's like a monopoly, you can't choose a different company because there are no other providers in the area unless I choose dish which I don't want.
Maybe that other modem will work out.
Nothing like internet trouble...I lose my patience when that stuff happens especially when you are paying big bucks for it.

11. Glad to hear they released you from the Hospital. Did they have wi-fi in the hospital??

That definitely sounds like a service provider issue and not a modem problem.

The diversion is great and, MUCH better yet, the ability to stay in touch with friends is immeasurably
wonderful at times like that.

Their menu and "room service" meals are pretty impressive -- even so, sooner or later it becomes
somewhat routine and boring and I find myself giving in to the temptation to surf for food porn. I
always feel so... ... ... ... ... dirty afterwards.
.
I do so LIKE that feeling, don't you?

The tagteam bedbaths? They NEVER reach that state of "humdrummery".
