(3,650 posts)I use Old Spice. I once accidentally bought the Pure Sport rather than the Classic version. I smelled like I was "on the make".

(72,178 posts)Hoping it would make me as adept with the ladies as a guy I knew who wore it. It didn't...
I liked the heavy wooden cap, and the pretty ladies in the advertisements who said that all their men wear English Leather, or they wear nothing at all.

I think that's Barbara Carrera, 2nd row down, second from left...

I have actually had to leave public spaces because someone was drenched in that, that...stuff. To me, it's what Rush Limbaugh's underwear hamper must smell like.

(2,783 posts)Just stay on the safe side, and don't rub cat butt, rotten onion or Old Spice on your face. Don't smell like Rush. Trust me on this one.

(2,783 posts)Brandy by The Looking Glass was playing on the radio, and later he told me he kept smelling his shirtsleeve where my head had rested as we drove to the movie. He said it smelled like Wella Balsam shampoo. He, of course, was dandied out in a short sleeve sport shirt and Ice Blue Aqua Velva.

(21,020 posts)that they thought Stetson was cheapo garbage stuff.
Well I'm here to tell everyone...
back in the early 1990s I lived with a guy who used it mixed with a few drops of patchouli oil.
It drove the women crazy.
I loved it. It was his signature scent, and you could always tell when he had just left the room. It never did wash out of his shirts.
Mr Pipi occasionally uses it without the patchouli oil. I still like it on him.

(21,020 posts)thought about it, but then, I sort of like the smell of horse/cow shit.
And dirt cellars, vinyl toys, mild skunk musk, manilla paper (the kind we drew on in school 50+ years ago), and some other odd aromas.
I would say it's probably me just liking a real stinky cologne/after shave, but it's true when I say that mixing Stetson with patchouli oil (on this particular guy) drove the women crazy. He got compliments all the time.

(28,749 posts)if you asked me shave cream I actually like a relatively "cheap" but still classy brand.

You can get it at Bath & Bodyworks, only $10.00 but buy it when it's on sale and it's $7.00.

(27,247 posts)but today's version seems to be different.
I remember a lot of aftershave commercials that were broadcast during sports programs and political talk shows of the '60s and '70s.
Old Spice featured some sailor walking through town and giving some local guy a bottle.
For Aqua Velva, there was the jingle sung by a sexy female voice: "There's something about an Aqua Velva man."
English Leather had some sexy woman cooing "All my men wear English leather, or they don't wear anything at all."
And the Hai Karate commercials showed some guy using martial arts to fend off all the girls who were over-attracted to his scent.
Graybeard
(6,996 posts)I remember it went something like this:
"Old Spice means quality",
said the Captain to the Bos'n.
"So look for the package
with the ship that sails the ocean."
.
Art_from_Ark
(27,247 posts)but that might have been what the sailor was whistling as he walked through the town.

(17,614 posts)I'm old. I remember all of them. But no one mentioned 007. My brother used to wear it (lots of it) when he was trolling for girls. He'd walk past my father to go out on the town and my father would say, "You smell like a pimp."
How about a thread for us "girls" of the dimestore perfumes we used to wear?
