Anybody know the Fawlty Towers episode Waldorf Salad?

I knew I had seen the American in it somewhere, and it was driving me crazy.

He was the Colonel in "Full Metal Jacket" who berated Joker for wearing a peace sign.

In case that's driving any of you crazy.

"the token North American in British films and television".

Actually, in my family we knew one or two actors as "the resident <nationality>", such as:
André Maranne (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0544860/), resident Frenchman in: Pink Panther films (Dreyfuss's assistant); Fawlty Towers (André, in the Gourmet episode), European Commissioner in Yes, Minister; and countless other small French parts in British TV series or films for 35 years

Shane Rimmer (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0727300/?ref_=fn_al_nm_1) (also Canadian, but typically playing an American):
Voice of Scott Tracy in Thunderbirds, lots more Gerry Anderson stuff, 3 James Bond films, Star Wars (a lot was shot in the UK), and, again, hundreds of small parts
http://www.aveleyman.com/ActorCredit.aspx?ActorID=14689 "Canadian actor based in the UK long associated with the work of Gerry Anderson, and any UK film in need of an American accent."

Then there's, sort of, Bert Kwouk (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0477297/?ref_=fn_al_nm_1), as resident Chinese - Cato in the Pink Panther films, and many, many more. Not sure if he really counts, because, though he grew up in Shanghai, and went to college in the USA, he was actually born in England.
http://www.aveleyman.com/ActorCredit.aspx?ActorID=9669 "Need an Asian actor in a British film? One's first choice anywhere in the 60s, 70s and 80s was likely to be Burt. Comic or sinister, take your pick. Great actor."

All of these have been in James Bond films; all except Bruce Boa in Doctor Who. I wonder if appearances in those 2 ought to be compulsory for 'resident actor' status.

well, probably decades ago, whenever there was an American in a British drama show on PBS, the American had a Southern accent.

During the closing credits of at least one episode, the letters on the 'Fawlty Towers' sign in front of the hotel had been rearranged.
