(50,572 posts)A research chemist, Plunkett was trying to create a new refrigerant from tetrafluoroethane gas...when the gas stopped coming out of the tank. They cut it open and found the gas had polymerized into a very slick plastic.
Ten years later, they were making two million pounds per year of this failure, which is called Teflon.

My mom clipped out a Dear Abby about failure and I kept it on my fridge for years. I nearly failed out of college, yet here I sit with a PhD.
