(19,373 posts)I absolutely adore Janis Joplin, and I usually cringe when people try to cover her, but this gal has got some pipes. Just awesome!

(3,056 posts)It takes a huge set to cover Janis.

(56,912 posts)people don't seek to be rich and famous anyway. But, I am glad for the chance to hear that and honestly, her story...
I felt as if she had been touched by Janis' Angel Wings.
her children and her husband. It was a ... blessing.
restored my faith for those minutes.

(32,723 posts)THIS is the real thing.
She didn't just scream,...she wailed.
You got a taste of her soul in her voice.

A lot of broken hearts were out there and Janis was the voice of a generation.

(118 posts)Flutterby is copying a behavior and is not even in the same ballpark as Janis. I hate this media creation art BS 'reality' crap....This type of spoon fed tripe is one of the major reasons the music industry is ruined....and if you like tripe I apologize...just picture the most vile thing you can eat.

(9,314 posts)Cry Baby is a song I absolutely love. I never thought I would ever hear anyone come close to Janis. This woman's performance was amazing, and as someone said above, the soul of Janis was in it. I would buy an album of her's. I watched the video twice. What a gift.

(23,099 posts)She was so totally awesome, funny, and smart and could sing like there was no tomorrow. She was telling us this tale of how she got treated by the Palm Beach police just that day and it was so smooth and effortless and funny as hell. You'd have thought she rehearsed it for weeks, but she was riffing about something that had happened just hours previously. One of my friends had never "gotten" her, but after two songs he was a fan for life. You really had to see her in concert, she was so totally live wire and on point.

(111,261 posts)somebody had stolen the truck with a lot of their equipment but they had enough left over to bring the place to its feet.
Even bummed out by circumstances, she put on one hell of a show.

(1,922 posts)I caught her in a coffee house (Huntington Beach?) before Cheap Thrills was released. It was just Janis and Sam Andrews on acoustic guitar.
I've never been the same, since.

I liked the "talking break" - Africa, Casablanca - LOL!!!
I don't want to dis the singer in the OP, she's good, but Janis is from a completely different dimension. A completely different space-time continuum. And that dimension is totally, completely, painfully real. The OP singer's performance had me cringing with the cuts to her family and the smarmy judges. Good, very good, but not real.

Unfortunately, she didn't do well later in the competition when it was discovered that she is not an amateur, despite being a "stay-at-home mom" for the last several years.
