Dora, one of the kittens we adopted from a shelter a nearly two years ago, has been loosing weight at a frightening pace. We just got the first round of test results in this morning and it appears her body is not producing red blood cells like it should. No definitive diagnoses yet but the vet did use the word "leukemia" which sent a shiver down my spine.
She's on steroids and antibiotics to try to rebuild her strength but until we know what's causing the anemia these could just be shots in the dark.
In addition to that, a close friend had to have his elderly cat put down yesterday. He wanted her buried on his property but he broke his ankle a few weeks ago so I drove out there last night and did it for him. That's never an easy task but with the health of Dora on my mind, this time it was particularly heart-wrenching.

(3,691 posts)I'm sure it was hard to bury your friend's cat when dealing with your own worries about Dora.

(3,818 posts)I hope she recovers and doesn't have feline leukemia. If she does, and recovers, there is a group on yahoo for people whose cats have this disease. They are willing to try new and different treatments that your local vet may not know about, just FYI.
